Tunes From the Vietnam Era

Wow Man! Great site and does it bring back some memories. I remember the first song I heard on my first "base liberty" in the squadron snack bar was "Walk Away Renee" by the Left Banke. Now when I hear that song (not very often these days), I always think about that little shack at Lackland AFB. Another quick song that I found was Funk 49. What a variety of songs that were popular back in those days. Oh, and as I'm typing this, I'm listening to one of the best head banging songs ever..."You Keep Me Hanging On" by Vanila Fudge. Oh yeah! Jeez I'm glad they weren't making us take drug tests in those days. :bounce:

Can't believe it but after I posted my reply to this thread, I watched Full Metal Jacket. The movie pretty much ends with the Tet Offensive in February of 1968, which just happens to be the month and year that I went into the Air Force.

Wooly Booly... :)

I think a lot of people here can relate to the 60's and 70's music, even if they weren't in the service. I spent most of the war in a hospital (not service related) but had many friends and family over there. Luckily most came back :)

The song that I really associate with Vietnam is "Satisfaction" by the Stones.

Whenever I hear that song, I get the image of a water skier behind a patrol boat --- from the movie "Apocolypse Now". It just sticks in the memory, somehow.

TRL, that song will always remind me of a certain young lady who danced all night long with me back in '65 in Pierre, South Dakota. Gawd, how great it would be to have that body of a 17 year old again.

My time in the service, 1968 to 1972 had a lot of different music that I loved from what I've discussed before, to the likes of Vickki Carr, Sergio Mendez and Brizill 66, Tommy James and the Shondells, to...get this...Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart, who made millions from music they made for soap operas.

Every generation has their biggies and as we age, we always have a special place in our hearts for those songs and groups that were a part of our growing up.

Just out of curiosity, I'm wondering if anyone here has heard of a group that I used to hear way back when I was in ND sometime around 1970ish. I listened to this group on what was called at the time, "underground radio" and the name of the group was Stark Naked. Anyone?

One last thing before I hang it up on this subject. We all remember the group Guess Who who were from Canada...right? Anyway, one of their biggest hits was "American Woman". Did anyone here see this group do this song in person? They were anything but nice to American women at the end of the song. Caught them in Winnipeg when I was up north.
