Ty Dillon To Make Sprint Cup Debut

Ty Dillon is scheduled to make his NASCAR Sprint Cup debut next month at Atlanta Motor Speedway, Mike Dillon, vice president of competition at Richard Childress Racing, told Motor Racing Network.

Ty Dillon ranks fourth in the Nationwide point standings after last weekend’s race at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. He has 11 top-10 finishes in 17 starts this season.

Should the 22-year-old Dillon make the Aug. 31 Atlanta race, it also would mark his first Sprint Cup race against his brother, Austin, who is a rookie this season.

Mike Dillon says that Ty Dillon, his son, will drive the No. 33 car for Circle Sport, which is aligned with RCR, at Atlanta. Part of the reason why Ty Dillon will make his debut at Atlanta is that Richard Childress Racing is scheduled to test there next month.

maybe it will help to race against his brother, because he has been less then impressive in Nationwide.
 
Wont know how he races till he gets on track. Eyes will be on him.
 
He's had a lot of hype coming up, even though Brian Scott and Paul menard have outperformed him in nationwide

Be nice to see, he's more or less like his brother as a driver. Ty I think will be equal eventually.
 
good for him. I wish my grandpa had the money his does. He gets a chance to do what most of us would kill for. hope he makes the most of it.

With the story breaking last week by ESPN that Kevin Harvick was leaving RCR after the 2013 season for Stewart-Haas Racing, stories started circulating why.

Harvick has raced his entire NASCAR career with RCR with a great deal of success.

He has a total of 14 wins in 120 races with them in the Camping World Truck Series, 39 wins in 290 races in the Nationwide Series, and 18 wins in 427 races in the Cup series. In addition, he was the 2001 and 2006 Nationwide Series Champion and also the 2003 Brickyard 400 and 2007 Daytona 500 champion with RCR.

After being associated with RCR for 16 years and having had tons of success with them, why would he want to leave?

Harvick was a fan favorite early on with taking over for the late Dale Earnhardt after his untimely death in 2001. The team changed the car number to 29 to give him his own identity and allow him to get out of Earnhardt’s shadow after the tragic accident, since they didn’t want to run the No. 3 after that tragic day in February. Harvick won three races after Earnhardt’s death in the 29 at Atlanta in a photo finish over Jeff Gordon.

Again, with all that history, why would he want to leave?

The answer is simple. The Dillon brothers.
 
Harvick hasn't raced his entire NASCAR career with RCR. He raced for Wayne & Connie Spears in the Truck Series and in the Winston West Series. Wayne did not have a contract in place when Dale Sr. died and Richard scooped Kevin up.

Harvick was already racing two years in the Busch series for Richard before he moved up to the 29(3). Matter of fact he was suppose to move up to Cup in 2002 in the 30 AOL car if Sr hadn't died. That ride eventually went to Johnny Sauter.

Edit: It was Sr who told Richard to sign Harvick. That if Richard hadn't he would have. So there was one point in time that Harvick could have been a DEI driver.
 
Yes, Kevin went from Spears Motorsports to RCR prior to Dales demise but Richard signed Kevin to drive the 3 (29) when Dale died.
My point was to DF's post that Kevin spent his entire NASCAR career at RCR, which he did not.
 
Then why would someone write an article that harvick was concerned about the Dillon bros.?

I claim ignorance and posted an article lols. I was unsure which is why I posted it here for the experts to look at.

I think it was pretty much common knowledge they were going to occupy two seats at RCR eventually when they were tearing up the southeast in late models a few years ago.
 
Honestly Brian Scott has proven to be more ready for the jump than Ty. Obvious the younger Dillon will end up in the 4th RCR entry at some point, so I wonder what happens with Brian.

Everyone always says that. Yet Ty managed 2 wins in two years in the same 3 truck Austin won the title in. And has yet to really get much going in the 3 car in Nationwide either. He certainly whipped some ass in ARCA.

I'm sure Rich Childress was buying the best seats he could find... Not downplaying their talent. Not sure they are the cream of the crop where they are at now but they aren't slouches.

Ty didn't learn anything in ARCA. Starting on the pole every race and leading every lap in a Cup car in the ARCA Series doesn't do anything for anyone.

Austin's a smoother and more consistent driver. Austin Dillon's the most consistent driver in all of NASCAR, actually. He'll points race his way in the Chase every year. Ty's out there to win races.

Ty sure has proven he's out there to win races in the NWS...
 
He came in through the bathroom window. protected by a silver spoon. But, now he sucks his thumb and wanders by the banks of his own lagoon.

Ty has been better from day one. He was smart enough to get a Dillion/Childress birth certificate.
 
Ty should provide some more exciting racing than his older brother. However I'm not convinced he's in same class as other youngsters such as Larson, Elliott or Blaney, but we shall see. I expect to see similar results as Stenhouse Jr to be honest.

I think RCR's obvious downswing was the major reason for Harvick leaving NOT the Dillon bros. If he truly believed RCR could win a championship, he would have stayed. His position as the flagship driver was never in jeopardy.
 
This is a huge mistake and I am a dissapointed with Papa Childress buisness management. Them boys should run their first cup race together in Texas. The childrens cowboy hat marketing opportunities would be incredible. I dont think either is a threat at getting to fire the awesome winners cap guns, but they know all about wearing stupid cowboy hats.

Probably a combination of both. Harvick's been complaining about the speed of the RCR cars for years. With the Dillons coming along he probably thought that more resources would go to them instead of him so he got out of there.
 
What I'm actually most curious about is how long a leash do the Dillon bros get from grandpapi?

Seriously, lets say they stink the joint out for 2,3, maybe 4 or 5 years. Does he have the resolve to fire his own grandkids? Childress is just setting himself up for a family sh*tshow.

The old saying that family and business don't mix is true and I'm curious how their careers will play out.
