Ty Norris, 38, a 14-year veteran of the motorsports industry, has joined Speedway Motorsports as vice president of special projects. "Ty Norris' broad knowledge of the motorsports industry and his ability to manage and motivate people will be a tremendous asset to our company," said Marcus Smith, vice president of national sales and marketing for Speedway Motorsports, Inc. "We've had several special projects in mind for quite some time, and Ty is the perfect person to move them forward." Most recently, Norris was executive vice president of Dale Earnhardt, Inc. He was hired in 1996 to oversee Dale Earnhardt's fledgling racing operation and under Norris' guidance DEI grew into one of the industry's super teams. During Norris' tenure, DEI won 65 NASCAR events and four championships, two each in the NASCAR Busch Series and the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series. In 1998, he helped start DEI's NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series operation which scored 14 victories, including two Daytona 500 wins, in six seasons. Prior to joining Dale Earnhardt, Inc., Norris was vice president and general manager of Felix Sabates' SABCO Racing. He also spent four years with R.J. Reynolds' Sports Marketing Enterprises where his duties evolved from media relations to serving as a liaison between NASCAR's drivers, team owners and track operators and the series sponsor. Born in Sumter, S.C., Norris grew up in Smyrna, Del., and attended Delaware State University where he studied journalism. Before moving into the motorsports industry, Norris worked as a sports writer for the News Journal in Wilmington, Del., and the Delaware State News.(SMI PR)(4-7-2004)
