U.S. DECLARES 'SWINE FLU' EMERGENCY; 20 CASES CONFIRMED IN U.S., 86 PEOPLE DEAD IN MEXICO AS A RESULT OF EPIDEMIC

WASHINGTON - The world’s governments raced to avoid both a pandemic and global hysteria Sunday as more possible swine flu cases surfaced from Canada to New Zealand and the United States declared a public health emergency. “It’s not a time to panic,” the White House said.

Mexico, the outbreak’s epicenter with up to 86 suspected deaths, canceled some church services and closed markets and restaurants. Few people ventured onto the streets, and some wore face masks. Canada became the third country to confirm cases, in six people, including some students who — like some New York City spring-breakers — got mildly ill in Mexico. Countries across Asia promised to quarantine feverish travelers returning from flu-affected areas.

The U.S. declared the health emergency so it could ship roughly 12 million doses of flu-fighting medications from a federal stockpile to states in case they eventually need them — although, with 20 confirmed cases in five states recovering easily, they don’t appear to for now.

Be careful everyone and take care of yourselves, especially you folks down in Texas.

Dang foreign countries......This seems to happen all to much. These low life countries have all these issues and we have to fight it. I guess we just Mexico 200 million dollars to fight it.

This time, it's in our country. CNN says over 100 probable cases in America. :(

Unfortunately, most of the cases here involve persons who've traveled in Mexico. Same with the cases in Canada and New Zealand.

But the way it's spreading is the concern. DHS completely closed a private school in NY because of it.

DEVELOPING STORY: U.S. swine flu cases climb to 40

The United States and other countries across the globe increased their vigilance as the World Health Organization said there are now 40 confirmed cases in the U.S.

That’s twice the number previously reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta. None of the cases in the U.S. has been fatal.

<snip>

The acting head of the CDC said earlier Monday that people should be prepared for the problem to become more severe, and that it could involve “possibly deaths.” Dr. Richard Besser said officials were questioning people coming into the U.S. about how their health.

WHO says it could decide in a matter of hours whether to raise its pandemic alert level as a result of the increasing number of confirmed swine flu cases in Mexico and elsewhere.

The quickening pace of developments in the United States in response to some 1,600 swine flu infections in neighboring Mexico was accompanied by a host of varying responses around the world.

Spain confirmed the first swine flu case outside North America on Monday.

WHO spokesman Paul Garwood said other issues will also be discussed at the Monday emergency meeting chaired by the agency's chief Dr. Margaret Chan. He said in the Spanish case the disease was transmitted in Mexico and not passed among people in Spain.

The European Union advised against nonessential travel to the United States and Mexico, China, Taiwan and Russia considered quarantines and several Asian countries scrutinized visitors arriving at their airports.

Guess we don't have to worry about wasting money on that seeing that our borders are wide open anyway.

BREAKING NEWS

CDC: Curb non-essential travel to Mexico

CDC: Do not go to school/work if you have any flu-like symptoms

CDC: Working with local government agencies on action plan if new cases arise

Let's all run out and panic

It's the flu people. The frigging flu. Out of 250,000,000 people in the US how many do you think will have the flu at any one time? There is no cause of panic. The symptoms of swine flu in people are expected to be similar to the symptoms of regular human seasonal influenza and include fever, lethargy, lack of appetite and coughing. Some people with swine flu also have reported runny nose, sore throat, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. CDC Link
Don't play with pigs. Especially pigs who have the flu. Otherwise take the normal precautions that you do every year to avoid the flu. Cover your mouth. Wash your hands. Don't touch Andy.

I would go on but then we'd devolve into a Podium thread and more of you need to see this here.

Maryland Braces for Swine Flu, Opens Command Center

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Maryland health officials are opening up a command center to help experts to respond quickly to any suspected cases of swine flu.

The state Department of Health and Mental Hygiene is opening the command center in Baltimore on Monday morning. Officials say no confirmed or suspected cases of swine flu have been reported in Maryland as of Sunday night.

Gov. Martin O'Malley will visit the center Monday afternoon and discuss preparations the state is making for the potential spread of the illness. Health professionals are being asked to monitor people with flulike symptoms and send in fluid samples for testing.

There have been 20 confirmed cases of swine flu in five states so far, none of them fatal. But the virus is believed to have killed dozens in Mexico, and the United States has declared a public health emergency.

C'mon folks

Wake up! It is a mild form of flu. A composite of swine, bird and human flu viruses.. Getting this form might help build up immunity to the NEXT flu coming down the pike.
I have had a mild flu for the past 5 or 6 days. I'm not sure what form it is (was) but I'm happy to serve for the host of these mild forms that come along.
Might help when the REAL bad one comes along.
I'm betting this Mexico flu has been here in the States for weeks and is so mild that it has gone unnoticed.
Also remember this is getting the NEWS off of the failing policies of the congress and executive branches of our government..
Betsy

So it's a conspiracy and the CDC, UN, WHO, HHS, DHS, and the media are all in on it?

OK. :cuckoo:

WHO raises pandemic alert to phase 4

Friend of mine in DC (Health and Human Services) says --

Doctors are being urged to try to diagnose over the phone and call in prescriptions. If they feel the patient must come in, they've been advised to meet the patient outside to give patient a mask before entering to prevent the spread of the virus.

Schools are being asked to send anyone with flu-like symptoms home. If the parents make them come to school anyways, the schools may consider isolating the student(s).

(our school district has not, to my knowledge, discussed the crisis)

Wouldn't it be nice to know how many folks Mexico loses to the flu in a normal flu season? Perhaps this isn't even a "crisis" down there...
Betsy:rolleyes:

maybe we should all go back to bed until the panic is over. get a grip people. it's the flu. no more, no less. take normal precautions and chances are you'll live unless you scare yourself to death.

For those of you who are crapping in your pants over this might I suggest a different link. The Health Map not only tracks swine flu but other outbreaks. You can zero in on your location to see if there are any outbreaks of anything you need to be concerned about. It also has news articles for the locations you pick.

This is such a non-story. Some of you need to grow a pair.

Why? A non story...perhaps, it might be a ochestrated distraction by the Dems to take away the heat on the proposed budget?

6 cases in Maryland.

The World Health Organization has declared a "pandemic is imminent".

One case less than 8 miles from my house. Kid had traveled to Mexico on spring break.
My daughter has already been alerted, just one more thing she's into, the FEMA medical team.
Will hundred of thousands die? No. Will hundreds of thousands+ become sick and overwhelm medical facilities, possibly. Will it disrupt commerce and the economy, yes.

Now, excuse me while I crawl into my hidey hole wearing my tin foil hat so the black helicopters don't spot me and drink my sterilized water and eat stale saltines. Let me know how it turns out,,,

I taught school for 30 years --- in all those years I NEVER had the flu -- even though hundreds of kids would come to school sick.

I kept my hands washed and insisted that if students had to sneeze or cough they used tissues to cover their nose and mouth. I also kept Lysol in my classroom and regularly wiped off desks and other surfaces.

Take precautions, yes ---- run in panic, no.

many of my teachers were same way. In geometery, she kept the Germ-X bottle by the door and everybody had to use it when they came in, or they simply couldn't enter.

I haven't read all of this thread, so bear with me if this have already been covered. It's amazing what the power of the media and pictures can do. With all the pictures of people in Mexico, and now around the US, wearing surgical masks, more and more people are buying said masks. What they don't realize, and the media has done nothing to tell them, is that the swine flu influenza virus is so small that it will go right through those masks, thus the masks are worthless. So friends, if you are looking for a way to prevent this flu virus from entering your body, don't look at a flimsy mask to help you. Always do as your mother told you, watch what you touch and wash your hands often. Yes, the virus is airborne, but if you are in the area of someone who has the virus, the mask won't help. Wash, wash wash.

eqypt has started exterminating the country of pigs. now that is just wrong.
