Facebook is partnering with the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation after an inmate convicted of child molesting viewed the Facebook page of his victim from prison. The victim, who is 17, was 10 when she was molested. The convict looked at Facebook and MySpace photos to see what she currently looks like. He then mailed drawings of her (including her current hairstyle) to her family. Facebook says it's going to help the state take inmates' illegal pages down. Although most prisoners do not have access to the Internet, many are accessing the social networking site through smuggled cell phones. California prison officials say they've received hundreds of complaints from victims who say they were contacted by prisoners through social media.

in texas, when schools are done with their computers, they go to the prison system. We're about to send off 35 Mac's from work.

It is sad really. I don't mind prisoners that are in jail for petty crimes like theft have access if it is for educational reasons. I'd like to think we can all learn from our mistakes and try and grow from them. However, the rapest and murders should not be able to get on the net.

edit that to be "anybody with a felony" should cover most bases?

I agree that inmates could benefit from some internet access. But it's really ot that hard for a jail to stand up some sort of web filtering appliance. Hell, limit them to educational sites only, and blacklist all the social networking, porn, gambling and everyhting else.

basically, use the same filter that most schools do

you're talking about a prison's internal network. wouldn't work for smuggled in cell phones which use verizon/sprint/t-mobile/whatever.
