Ya'll likely know that Richmond joins Indianapolis this weekend in having the SAFER system in place for a race.

Hope no one needs it this weekend, but take comfort in knowing it is in place just in case.

1,197 feet of the barrier line the turns of the Richmond track. The walls are 40 1/2 inches high and contain steel tubes and 22 inch-thick blocks of Styrofoam wedged between the original wall and the steel tube outer wall.

Naturally race car drivers have a compulsion to test everything.......

The morning practice session saw two incidents; 2002 Winston Cup Champion Tony Stewart looped the No. 33 Monaco Motorcoach Chevrolet in Turn 1. Stewart did not make contact and continued on...

Brian Sockwell tested it for real.

Brian Sockwell, driving the No. 51 Metropolitan Siding Chevrolet made hard contact in Turns 3 and 4. The truck was towed and Sockwell was not injured. "Something broke coming off turn 3. I got to test the wall out, I guess. I knew it was going to be a hard hit. Evidently, the SAFER wall did alright. I love this racetrack, I wish I was going to race here tonight, that's what we came here to do." - commented Brian Sockwell

NHIS just got their safty walls up. I hope this works and not injured the drivers

I wish that the walls were going up faster and on more tracks, but I guess in the world of Nascar this is speedy.
