INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Al Unser Jr. was charged with domestic battery early Tuesday after a woman accused the two-time Indianapolis 500 winner of hitting her and leaving her on the side of an interstate highway.

The 40-year-old Unser was arrested at his motor home on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway infield, according to a police report.
Unser was released from the Marion County jail after posting a $30,000 bond. He avoided reporters by leaving through a tunnel to a neighboring building.

A court hearing was scheduled for Wednesday, sheriff's Maj. Vincent Cascella said.

Officials with Unser's Indy Racing League team were still gathering information about the arrest and had no immediate comment, Kelley Racing spokeswoman Nancy Miller said. A telephone message left for Unser's attorney, James Voyles, was not immediately returned.

Police reported finding Jena L. Soto standing next to a guardrail on Interstate 465 at about 3:30 a.m. Tuesday. Soto told police she was Unser's girlfriend of four years.

The 38-year-old Soto, of Albuquerque, N.M., told police she and Unser had been at a strip club and that she was driving because Unser was intoxicated. She said she and Unser were arguing, and that he repeatedly shifted the gears into neutral and reverse. She said she then hit Unser in an attempt to make him stop and he responded by hitting her in the face.
Soto told police she pulled to the side of the highway, got out of the vehicle, and that Unser then drove away.

Unser first denied knowing Soto, according to a police report. After being told of her allegations, officers said Unser told them Soto had hit him first.

Unser, the winner of the Indy 500 in 1992 and '94, is divorced.

Two-time Indianapolis 500 winner Al Unser Jr. was arrested on charges of domestic battery early this morning.

Marion County Sheriff's Department deputies responded to a call of a woman stranded alongside I-465 near I-70 on the Southwestside at 3:34 a.m.

They found Jena L. Soto, 39, standing near the guardrail on the northbound side of the highway.

She told the deputies she and her boyfriend of four years, Unser, had been at the Classy Chassy, a nightclub in the 4000 block of South Harding Street, and that Unser had been drinking and was "very intoxicated," according to the report by Deputies Timothy Dowdy and Russell Rourke

While she was driving him to their motor home, which was parked on the infield of the Speedway, he began shifting the car into reverse and neutral.

Soto said he would not stop, so she slapped him with the back of her hand. That's when she said Unser allegedly struck her. She pulled to side of I-465 just north of Kentucky Avenue and got out.

Unser, 40, drove on to the motor home, where sheriff's deputies and Speedway police officer Todd Peirce later found him.

Unser at first said he did not have an argument with his girlfriend earlier in the evening, and said he did not know Soto, according to police.

Dowdy then walked Unser through the events of the night -- as they were reported by a 911 call and Soto's statements.

"She hit me first," Unser told Dowdy.

The officers confirmed that Soto was staying with Unser because several of her belongings were in the exact position she had told them they would be, as well as several photos showing Unser and Soto together.

Dowdy took photographs of Soto's face and saw a "slight bruise to her right eye," according to the report.

Unser was arrested him on preliminary charges of domestic battery. Unser was released at 9 a.m. from the lockup at the City-County building after posting a $30,000 bond. He is scheduled for a court appearance at 9 a.m. on July 19.

Driving for Kelley Racing, Unser finished 12th in May's 500-Mile Race. He's a two-time victor, winning in 1992 and 1994. His 1992 win by .043 seconds is closest in track history. He's had nine top-10 finishes at Indy and won CART titles in 1990 and 1994.
