USA Olympic boxer basically tanks on purpose

American super heavyweight Estrada had a chance to get maybe the only medal team USA has a chance at in Athens. Instead, he fought passively, admitting later he never pursued Nunez because he figured he would lose anyway and didn't want to take any more punishment.

"If I'm going to lose I'm going to lose getting hit as little as possible," Estrada said. "I'd rather not get hit at all. This is just one part of my life, I've got a lot more to go."

Estrada and most of his teammates plan to go pro, and there was one pro boxing agent wearing a T-shirt with Estrada's picture on it at the boxing venue.

"These things happen," Estrada said. "It's just the end of this book and I'll have to bring a new book out."

Makes you proud to be an American, don't it?

The really sad part about this is that there are probably hundreds of fighters out there who have dreamed of representing their country in the olympics, but never got the chance. They would have left every ounce of blood, sweat and tears in that ring if they had the shot. :(

And this chump treats it as nothing more than a cheap stepping stone to a pro career.

not to defend anything, but olympic boxing is far cry from pro boxing in the united states...anyone watching an Olympic fight would be confused as to why the guy who gets the crap kicked (or punched) out of him ends up winning the gold, but it happens. Kind of like how Olympic basketball is different from the NBA, but waaaaaaaaay more so

I understand the differences between pro boxing and amateur is huge. But if he didn't want to fight for a medal then why go. It's not like you have to have a great amateur record to fight professionally. I realize that having the olympics on your resume means more money earlier in the pro game.

But, it also seems like a guy with no heart won't be long for the fight game anyway.

that's the problem with boxing now anyway, this guy was being a realist, he's doing what he can to make a lot of money quick, a punch drunk fighter (tyson for example) isn't worth very much...no one boxes pro for glory anymore, just wealth, boxing probably shouldn't be an olympic sport.

I hope he goes pro. and get his silly butt knocked out everytime he steps into the ring.
