Vasser to NASCAR? UPDATE: Jimmy Vasser, the 1996 CART champion while driving for Chip Ganassi, nearing the end of his first season at Team Rahal, chances are slim he'll be back for a second. With primary sponsor Shell either cutting back or going away, Rahal is unlikely to be able to meet Vasser's asking price. That has the 36-year-old driver knocking on doors. "Team Rahal is not in position to keep the team intact, or so I'm told," Vasser said. "There's interest all around the paddock, but nobody's able to make a commitment." Vasser was tempted to go to NASCAR a few years ago and is looking that way again. He said a BGN deal that would allow him to continue to run the Indianapolis 500 would appeal to him. "My goals are still long-term. Nobody's ever won a CART championship and a Winston Cup championship, and I'd like to be the first," he said. "But at this point, it's hard to make choices until there's some options on the table."(Indianapolis Star)(10-7-2002)
UPDATE: Chip Ganassi [#40, #41 owner] has been keeping a low profile in the two weeks since Sterling Marlin was forced out of the Winston Cup championship race. But now comes word he may be looking once again at putting Jimmy Vasser in a Winston Cup car next season

Hasta la vista, Mr Excitement

Honestly, I can easily see Spencer not wheeling a car for Ganassi next year. He has simply not produced.

Chip couldnt get rid of Never Forgets just yet. He needs someone to protect his other drivers! Just like in Hockey

I think Jimmy is still going to have a ride next year. I also think that he will be better next year too.

If Spencer stays, that opens up the possibility that Chip will run three cars. He will still need a sponsor for Vasser. Anyone got any ideas?

Chip will already have three cars with Marlin in the #40, Spencer in the #41 and McMurray in the #42.

I do not see Ganassi fielding 4 cars.

I don't know much about Vasser, and I doubt he'll be with Ganassi's Cup team next season, but I don't have anything against the idea either. It seems more and more open wheelers are looking to get into stock cars, particularly NASCAR. I heard one yesterday say that he would love the opportunity, and talked about NASCAR as a premiere racing series.

Pretty cool pat on the back for an open wheel guy. Then again, is it respect so much as the lure of big bucks?

Who knows who he will end up with, But its Silly Season and Its really just a waste to time to guess at this point...

If Chip wants to give Mr. Memory another year but also wants Vasser, then put Vasser in Busch for a year.

Vasser has done well in Cart, he should run in Busch for at least a year if he wants to move over to the stick cars though.

You're right, sorry, I guess I'm just stupid. Shouldn't have posted that:( :(

Don't feel stupid........I didn't pick up that MISTAKE until the corrections came up either. I'm not stupid about NASCAR and I made the same mistake you did.:)

I like Vassar, but don't think that he can just jump into Cup!

Does anybody know if he has raced before in other than open wheel???

IROC isn't NASCAR. Just look at how Scott Pruett shocked the NASCAR world. Or did he? He needs to go to busch for a few years.

Scott Pruett was placed in a bad situation, trying to get a brand new team up and running.

I think Vasser would do really good in a Cup car. It seems like anyone who can get the right equipment can do very well and if him and Chip team up again it might mean a championship a few years down the road (it would also be the first time a CART champion won a Winston CUp championsip).
If Vasser did move up to Cup he probably would take over the 41 car that Spenser is driving. The reason I say this is because Target was Vasser's sponsor when he was driving for Chip in CART and won the championship.

I know that last yr. when Penske was still in CART, Jimmy did some kind of testing with a nascar team of some sort. I only remember this because I found the way that he referred to it amusing........ He told the people that he was talking to ( my friend was one of those people, that's why I know that he said this) He mentioned that he was spending their weekend off doing something with "that bucket of bolts called nascar". Now, that's not an EXACT quote, but he did refer to it as a bucket of bolts. I thought that was a rather humorous way to put it.

Oops, just changed my mind about the guy.

If you're going to race with stock car guys (and gals), you ought to at least respect their equipment.

Spencer has done nothing this year, I wouldn't be surprised to see Vassar in at least one race next year in the 41 car.
