Quick story for Veterans Day. It was early, 1970. I was sitting in a bar in Koza, Okinawa, quietly having a drink. Nixon had just marked the beginning of bringing the troops out of Vietnam, most of which were Marines. All at once I looked up and a bunch of Marines came bursting into the bar and one of them sat down beside me and another sat down on the other side. I thought, oh boy, these boys are looking for some fun and I thought I was going to be the fun. One of them kept looking at me and then finally asked if I was in the Air Force. Not backing down I told him yes, my body tensing up. He then hollered at the bar tender and told him that he was buying all the drinks for me, then he looked at me while holding his hand out to shake mine, said "Damn, you guys saved my butt many times with that Operation Archlight". I smiled and said thanks and we enjoyed each other's stories for the rest of the afternoon.

BTW, if there are any Marines here who were stationed at Camp Hansen during that time, it wasn't me. I told them not to do it! :D

Ok, so this isn't my story but my dad's. During one of his four years in the Army, he was stationed in S. Korea at the DMZ. Well apparently one day, they were bored, so they made airplanes out of bamboo and put motors in them. They had the airplanes on little strings and it flew around in a circle attached to the string. Well during one of the flights, the string broke and my dad and his army buddies went running across the Rec area of the base screaming for everyone to duck so that the model airplane wouldn't hit them in the head.

It's one of the few good stories my dad and grandpa had about being in the military.

My grandpa was a WW II vet who served in the European and North African Theater (Army), and he actually help liberate one of the camps. My grandpa never ever talked about what he saw in there, all he would say is that he told his commanding officer to NEVER, EVER make him go into one of those camps again. I've seen pictures of the mass graves, the video reels of what the camps were like, but not in a million years could I ever comprehend what my grandpa experienced, seeing it with his own eyes in person.

A big THANK YOU to all who have served. The sacrifices you made can never be repaid and should never be forgotten.:salute::salute::salute:

Words can not truly express the gratitude we owe each and every one of you who served and those who are still serving.

But Thank You, from the bottom my heart.

From one veteran to all other veterans, Happy Veterans Day and thanks for your service, past and present. It was a pleasure to serve this great country.

Here is also to remembering and honoring the fallen..

It's been a few years since I was in high school but don't students have the day off usually? My brother had school today....

I once asked a friend about his middle name, "Lewis", and the less common spelling.

He told me "Lewis" was the name of his uncle. Lewis was killed in WW II, he was shot down as a pilot.

My friend's dad was also listed as MIA at about the same time. In reality he was a POW, in a German camp. He almost starved before he was liberated. It had to be torture for dear old mom and dad, thinking they lost two sons.

All of our soldiers deserve the love and respect, but there are a of lot heart broken parents, young widows, and orphans deserving the respect and honor as well.
