Villeneuve NASCAR Deal Closer
Jacques Villeneuve appears to be one step closer to joining the stock car ranks in 2007. According to RDS, the former Formula One champion has reached an agreement with Roush Racing to help facilitate his move into NASCAR next spring. Team president Geoff Smith tells XM Satellite radio that Villeneuve would begin his career in the Craftsman Truck Series before graduating to the Busch Grand National Series.

Smith adds that there's a 50-percent chance Villeneuve could be in Montreal next August for the inaugural Busch Series race at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. Villeneuve reportedly needs to find between $16-million and $18-million in sponsorship before the deal can be finalized.

Earlier this month Smith was quoted as saying they would be willing to work with Villeneuve and his group but that the ball was squarely in their court in terms of getting the necessary financing in place.(tsn.ca)

Guess that is buying a ride. Good luck. I bet it won't be easy.
 
Uhhhh, there goes Roush again..........what ???? As Charlie Chan used to ask number son,, "explain, please".

my personal opinion is that Roush has his hands in too many teams....(as does Hendrick).

hate to say it.....i think its time for franchises like the other big sports have.

wouldnt be surprised if one day Roush had his hands in on half the field one day.
 
They already do its called the top 35

GEEZE !!!! I am feeling pretty inadequate about the tone of this thread. First had to ask TBFM to explain and now, wonder what is meant by the reference to the top 35 and a franchise.
It sure is tough dealing with a lack of comprehension, but, please................. explain. :)

IMHO the top 35 locked in points position is a franchise all be it with a performance clause .it is a franchise . When M Waltrip bought into the top 35 at the begining of the year to guarantee his starting in the first four races he bought a franchise .
 
NASCAR is pretty much wide open as anybody who buys NASCAR credentials, leases or owns a race car and either is or hires an experienced driver, can attempt to qualify, and once qualified, can race.

A true franchise would be for NASCAR to limit the number of teams, or franchises, establish regulations that do not favor previous year performance for the first five races.

With a true franchise, every team would qualify each week and those who do not qualify, do not race unless they purchase the qualifying rights from another team.

When one team folds the tent, that franchise becomes available to fill the set number of franchises available by the franchiser, NASCAR. The sale price is dictated by what the market will bear between seller and buyer, NASCAR having only the right to accept or reject the owner for specific listed reasons. Sort of like owning a liquor license in many states where all the regulations pertaining to ownership are spelled out in advance.

Until that type of exclusive franchise system whereby rights are bought and sold by franchisees, it is doubtful anything less could be called a franchise.

You are correct but we are talking NASCAR here and the word TRUE is a non starter. If you had true franchises you would have to guarntee them a starting spot so you could only have 43 teams . You dont give a franchise to McDonalds and then tell them they cant open some weeks because there to slow at making burgers ? The franchises are selling time in front of 150,000 plus crowds and TV time hopefully.

They expect around 64 teams for Daytona 07. That means 21 guys are going home , so how would that work ? I dont have the answer but I dont see NASCAR giving up any power or any money.
 
So....Nascar Owners really like the foreign drivers now.......There goes the good ol boys.

Bucky, that's what I wrote about some time ago. Wanna see the death of NASCAR, continue on this path. While there will always be those who are fans of stock car racing who will say, "I only want to see the best race", the fickle fans of this country will drop NASCAR like a rock if they see that the future in this good old boy sport turns internationally.

Response: Actually, the word TRUE is the starting word and descriptive word whether it applies to NASCAR or any other franchisor. Multimatic offered the the top 32 qualifiers were "franchisees" under the current NASCAR system and question remains, how can that be considered a franchise ???? If all the suppossed "franchise does is give the final 32 a starting position in the first five races of the next year and dissolves, that is not nor can it be considered, a franchise.

They DO NOT guarantee starting positions in the first five races of the new year to McDonald's or any other high profile sponsor or team finishing out of the top 32 in points. Response: As far as NASCAR giving up money or power, not so. If NASCAR were to establish a franchise system, there is nothing to prevent the sanctioning body from making fields large enough to encompass a set number of franchisees which could either be an equal number of franchises per starting position OR continue under the current system and sell more franchises than starting positions. One thing for sure, doing the later would create tougher competition. As it is, of the teams not qualifying many rarely attempt to race on a regular schedule after Daytona.
Were NASCAR to take this route, they lose little to no power as they still maintain control as to who can buy a franchise, set regulations for franchise owners, remain profitable, set rules, make t.v. deals, etc..
The ones who might benefit the most are the franchise owners, when they sell, by setting the price of the franchise.
This is all speculation and obviously, NASCAR apparently sees no benefit at this time in operating a franchise system.
