Vintage Starting Grids?

I'm looking for the starting grids for 1959-1960 NASCAR events (or any other sanctioning body's stock car event s from those 2 years) .

Most importantly to me, I hope to learn the year/make of the race cars involved. I need verification of a particular year/make's aerodynamic 'race-speed' abilities; if it placed in superspeeedway events, it should be fine for drag racing velocities. In other words, will my car's fins create too much rear end lift at 125 MPH, or was it doing 155 at Daytona with those same fins??

Can anyone point me to a source??? THANKS!

1959 Info

Try that WQ59B....it doesn't have the starting lineup, but that will help.

Welcome aboard!!! If I find out anything else, I'll post here for you.

Thanks fergy- for the welcome & the link. I'd seen the link page before when searching for this stuff - why is the historical info so hard to find? That link doesn't even report the average speed- pretty weak on NASCAR.com's part.

I found this:

which probably helps my root question. '59 Chevys won their fair share in NASCAR and their fins were quite large & relatively horizontal. I have a '59 Buick with diagonal fins- I should have no problem doing 125 on the strip (aerodynamically speaking-- I'll take care of the HP).

Am I about right that circa 1959-1960 NASCAR was in the 155 MPH range?

Now for another question- any good sites for vintage still pics of NASCAR, again circa '59-60? Thanks again for your time, fergy.

Hey another Drag Racer!!! Post some pics of your project!!!

Windsor377- is that your engine in your avatar? So THAT'S where the beef is!

My car is still in many pieces; body is in finish prime & ready to remount, all chassis work is done and numerous engine parts have been purchased, but the only pics I have are an unprimed body shell from 3-4 years ago. Figuring on weighing a hefty 4200 including me, I'd like to be able to go low 11s, which means roughly 550 HP.

However- I refuse (at this point) to put a roll bar in --I'm in love with it being a 2-dr hardtop-- so I'm sure at that level of performance I'll be bounced from the track on Day 1. If I can get a few runs in during a marque meet, and I really enjoy it, perhaps I'll go ahead and install a bar.

If I understand what you are looking for WQ, it may not find it on the web. Starting grids for races in the 50's and early 60's are hard to come by.

General info along the lines you mentioned.

The top dog car for speed in NASCAR in 1959 and 1960 was the Pontiac. Hands down.

1959 - - Fireball Roberts had the pole for the July Daytona race at 144.997 MPH, he also won the race at a 140.581 average. In the February events of that year, Fireball had the pole for the 100 mile qualifier at 140.580. A gentleman by the name of Bob Welborn won that race and the pole for the 500 in a Chevy. The 500 mile race was won by Lee Petty in an Oldsmobile.

1960 - - Top qualifying speeds in February were all Pontiacs. For two 100 milers and the 500 the pole sitters were Cotton Owens at 149.892 and Jack Smith at 148.157. Fireball won the first 100 miler in his Poncho and Jack Smith won the second in his. Junior Johnson won the 500 in his Chevy at an average of 124.740. In July Jack Smith put his Pontiac on the pole at 152.129 and won the race as well at an average of 146.842.

During those two years the only other NASCAR tracks which would be of interest in terms of speed were Darlington, Atlanta, and Charlotte.

Atlanta held its first two races in 1960. Fireball won both poles one at 133.129 and one at 134.596. He also won the first race. All Pontiacs. Bobby Johns won the second race in another Pontiac.

Charlotte also ran its first two races in 1960, and surprise surprise, Fireball won both of those poles as well. One at 133.904 and the other at 133.465. Joe Lee Johnson won the first race in a Chevy and Speedy Thompson the second in a Wood Bros Ford.

Darlington held one race in 1959 and lo and behold the pole winner was Fireball Roberts at 123.734, the race was won by Jim Reed in a Chevy. 1960 and they ran Darlington twice. Guess who won both poles. Fireball again at 127.750 in May and 125.549 for the Labor Day race. Joe Weatherly won the first race in a Holman Moody Ford and Buck Baker the second in a Pontiac owned by the aforementioned Jack Smith.

Thanks for the futher input guys. Yes, I've looked over both the DOC site and jayski's site- no starting lineups. I think I need to go to print sources for this info.

HardScrabble-- Pontiac's dominance of the '59-63 era is no news to me, they killed the competition dead. Check the win list:
