Less than 3 days after a photo this pickup truck was posted on the Internet, the Virginia DMV has suspended the license plate for being racist.

14 is a code for the amount of words in the white supremecist credo.
CV is for the Sons of Confederate Veterans.
88 is a code for Heil Hitler. H is the 8th letter in the alphabet.

To top off the driver's ignorance, he's parked in a handicap spot. Anyone in Virginia feel like cutting some brake lines? Everything I ever needed to know about Neo-Nazi's I learned from this tailgate.

EDIT: Sorry I misspelled "Virginia" in the title.....and "DMV". :p

While I don't agree with everything on the truck, how does it make you any better by wanting someone to cut his brake lines?

And the Sons of Confederate Veterans is not a racist organization. The numbers on the plate...who knows why he put them on there, but its easy to assume why.

According to the website the picture orginally appeared on, a poster stated he knew the driver personally. Apparently the owner of the truck was in the Pentagon when it was hit and suffered serious burns, which could be the reason he's in a handcapped parking spot. I don't know if its true or not, but that's what it says.

I have a handicapped parking placard. There is nothing so agravating then to see a able bodied person park in a handicapped spot then walk/run into a store. Nothing.
Police won't do a damm thing either.

Make me a Constable with the power to write tickets for this offense and I'll put a hellofva dent in the state budget deficit.:D

I don't know about Virginia, but here, your handicap tag is a mirror hanger in the front windshield.

As for racism ... isn't the right to free speach one of those things every person is supposed to have ... not just those you agree with? And frankly, I'm not convinced all those 'codes' aren't just made up of whole cloth.

no those codes actually do mean that

Touche, but name one Neo-Nazi that has done something positive for society that outweighs the negitive things.

Never said it was, but when combined with the other elements....the shoe fits.

While he might have a ligit handicap, condsidering that he owns a large pickup that you need to climb into, it's highly unlikely it bothers him much.

On a side note, after learning that 14 and 88 have racist meanings, I will never look at Stewart's and Junior's numbers the same way again. Thanks Neo-Nazis. You ruin everything.

I hate Illinois Nazis.

Or, it could be that he drives around a person with a handicap. Or not. One of my neighbours has a handicap tag on his 4x4, He's got no legs below the knees. Neither does his daughter. He actually uses his truck for deliveries. He's a professional painter who's frequently does life size portraits.

Good point, or he could have borrowed someone else's handicap pass.

I know in Illinois they are trying to get rid of the ones that hang from the mirror because people who they were issued to tend to let their non-handicapped family and friends use it in their own cars. I suppose it amounts to the same thing, but at least with the license plate they'd have to be actually driving the car it was issued to.

I just got back from visiting my parents in Phoenix, and open handicap spots there are hard to find because they live in a retirement community and everyone has a handicap pass. So they've close to doubled the number of handicap spots, and they're still all taken.

All I know about this is from what I've read here and it's clear that there are some, maybe many here, who don't condone free speech. I can understand the reasoning behind it, but this is clearly a case that is a rush to judgement here in this forum.

not likely...its a Ford;)

That doesn't quite hold water --- I drive a Lincoln, but I have Chevy driver numbers on it.

As for the handicap thing, a whole lot of people here in my little town are legitmately using the spaces -- and a large number drive large pickups.

Keep in mind, a handicap sticker/placard/plate can be issued for someone with a heart condition --- they have no visible problems. My dad was issued one because of his implanted defibrillator --- his doctor warned against long walks --- of course he lived in Utah over a mile above sea level.

Same here, TRL. The hubby and I drive vehicles made by Ford/Dodge/Chrysler but we root for Chevy drivers.

And the same here for the handicap placard that my MIL has we often use on our vehicle when we take her somewhere with us in one of our vehicles.

I don't necessarily believe in the message being portrayed on the vehicle and the license plate, but I do believe in the right to free speech.

Buck, clearly you're in a rush to judgement.

The problem isn't him expressing his hate on the tailgate of his pickup. If he wants the world to know he's an ignorant bigot, well that's his right to express that. As long as he doesn't take action on his hate, he's well within his legal rights. I don't agree with it, but it's his right.

The problem (as stated in the original post) is the license plate. By having a racist code on his plate, that is illegal as the state can not promote hatred. In the state's defence, the message was coded and slipped through the system. It wasn't until it was posted on the Internet 5 years later, that the message became clear, and the plate was revoked.

No, not really. My son uses my truck all the time, if my truck had a handicap plate instead of the placard all sorts of people would go off the deep end seeing him sprint into a store. He never parks in a handicap spot, when we go to Lowe's he drops me at the door and parks in a regular space.

The placard is issued to a person, not a vehicle. The placard comes with a certificate naming the user, same as vehicle plates come with a registration naming the owner. I can use my placard on anybody elses vehicle. As long as I'm with it and have the certificate in my wallet.

Family and friends know it's easier for me to get in and out of my truck then try to get into their car of normal ride height. That's why 99% of the time I drive or ride in my truck. That's the reason, well one of them I got a truck, but I sure do miss my Caddy and Buick,,at times.

btw, that plate " I foresee victory 88" meaning he's a Jr fan. :)

Could SS55 handle be miss read also? SS was on the Nazi uniforms right? And 55 looks like SS, so he must be a big supporter.

Now since we know SS we know that not true...so maybe we need not to judge less he be judged. Anything can be miss heard or missread. Maybe they guy is a wack job. Or maybe there's another meanin that we do not know.

Sorry to pick on you SS55, just coming up with an ex)

Buck, clearly you're in a rush to judgement..

My point is that sooner or later, someone like kk69 will get control of the government and make it illegal for people such as myself to voice our opposition to anything liberal. It's one thing to think before you do something, but it's totally something else to take action for what someone says or thinks. I don't have, and probably will never buy one, but I wonder when it will become illegal for someone to display the Confederate battle flag. Time is getting close, yet anyone can burn the American flag, portray Jesus Christ in urine, or just about anything else that isn't in the "norm". I'm sure there wouldn't be much of an uprising if some liberal thinking people, dragged this guy out of his truck and beat the heck out of him. I know many people would say that he deserved it. And just who can incite a riot? Does it depend on who is doing the rioting? You bet it does.

I don't know, maybe because you are the youngest and most vulnerable. Besides, I don't just pick on you the youngest, I also go after the oldest, my pal Whizz and neighbor muggle. I spread the wealth equally. :D

The Washington Post has a follow-up to this story:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/04/28/AR2010042805335.html

The owner of this pickup contacted TWP via phone after they ran an article about it. He identified himself as Douglas Story, a dump truck driver for the Virginia DoT.

He claims that the 14 and 88 in the license plate are reference to his favorite NASCAR drivers: Tony Stewart and Dale Earnhardt Jr. He also claims that he got the plates in 2009 after Earnhardt and Stewart switched teams and numbers. Even though DMV records show his plates were actually issued in 2005.

He does admit that the CV is for Confederate Veterans after finding out his great-great-great-grandfather was a second lieutenant with the Alabama Partisan Rangers during the Civil War. And that the Confederate Flag celebrates his Southern heritage. Story also says that members of his family are Jewish, and he has a handicap parking sticker because of injuries he suffered in a 1985 motorcycle accident.

All this actually makes you feel sorry for him. Until he says this in the interview:

The Washington Post said:
He says he doesn't know who took the photo of his truck, in a handicapped parking spot, that became a viral sensation on the Web. "Probably someone who obviously has a soft spot for Islam," he said, pronouncing the word "I-slam," "because if you pronounce it 'Ih-slahm,' it's not disparaging enough."

Yup. No bigotry there.

He recieved a letter from the DMV saying that he needs to get new plates, or he can appeal it. He says he wont appeal it because he doesn't want his truck firebombed. His boss at the VDoT also told him he could no longer park his truck on VDoT property until the anti-Islam stickers are removed off his truck.

He removed the stickers, and has filed for new plates.

the Confederate flag it may celebrate southern heritage, it also celebrates rebeling against the government

So why the picture? Are you assuming he's in the KKK?

Actually, I was just joking about the KKK thing, but it turns out he really might be a member of the KKK.

After he revealed his name to The Washington Post, his public Facebook page was found:
http://www.facebook.com/doug.story225?v=info

His favorite book is "My Awakening" by former KKK Grand Wizard David Duke, and his bio contains this:

Doug Story said:
100% WHITE MAN, 100% ARYAN, 100% PRO-LIFE (Children are innocent), 100% PRO DEATH PENALTY (Criminal Scum aren't innocent). Over the past 28 years; I, like David Duke, have had an Awakening.

The link at the bottom of the page goes to his membership profile page at NewSaxon, and white-separatist social media site.

So much for the whole, "my license plate is a NASCAR fan thing."

On a side note, there's a Porsche Boxster S in the parking lot at work with it's spoiler always stuck in the up position. To me, it's the automotive equalivlant of whale tail: I'm not sure if it's sexy or trashy.
