Jeff Maupin cruises to second consecutive Volunteer Speedway Super Late Model victory on 'Kerry Jones Trucking Night at the Races'
By Robert Walden

BULLS GAP, Tenn. (May 12) — Kerry Jones Trucking Night at the Races Saturday at Volunteer Speedway featured a five-division racing program. But really the “headliner” featured was Jeff Maupin of Greeneville, as he led the 35-lap “Gateway Ford” Super Late Model feature flag-to-flag for his second consecutive victory.

Shane Roberts with a fast-lap of 12.845-seconds (112.110 mph) narrowly edged out Maupin for the pole position, as Maupin toured the 4/10-mile high-banked oval at 12.855 to earn the outside front row starting berth.

At the drop of the green flag Roberts and Maupin drove off door-to-door into the first turn, but Maupin powered into the lead racing off turn two on the high-side. Once out front he never looked back. With Maupin quickly checking out over Roberts and Kerry Jones, Mike Smith dropped to the inside of Bryan Hendrix racing off the fourth turn on the second lap to move into fourth in the running order.

Halfway into the 35-lapper Maupin, driving the Beamer’s Flooring Outlet/G&W Hauling & Rigging/TEG Enterprises/Landair Transport Inc./O’Reilly Auto Parts/Simpson Racing Equipment/Vic Hill Racing Engines/Team GRT Race Cars/Hoosier Racing Tires/No. 0 Monte Carlo, held a commanding advantage over Roberts, who had Jones glued to his rear bumper. With the race running clean-and-green, Maupin was on cruise-control as he continued to distance himself from his closest challengers.

In a very dominating performance, when the checkered-flag waved Maupin had pulled away to slightly over a full-straightaway advantage over runner-up Roberts, with Jones, Randy Davidson and Smith rounding out the top-five at the finish.

Completing the top-10 were Shanon Buckingham, Hendrix, Herman Goddard, Van Lester and Dennis Alverson.

“Man, what an awesome car this is to drive,” said Maupin following his second visit of the season to victory lane. “The last couple of years, to be quite honest I had kind of gotten down on myself because with the former team I was driving for we were just having horrible luck. You name it and it was happening to us. When you get in a rut and aren’t running well, it just shakes your confidence. Late last year I hooked up with my good buddy Vic Hill, and he doesn’t just build strong racing engines — he’s probably one of the best around in setting up a race car — especially here at ‘The Gap.’ Look at all the races he’s won at this track, his record speaks for itself.

“I’m telling you, it’s such a great feeling to come to the track and run as strong as we are. Winning races is definitely a confidence booster. But to win races you’ve first got to run good, and I know every week we pull into the pits that we’ve got a good race car. We work hard back at the shop during the week going over the car, and that’s what it’s all about — you’ve got to have a good car maintenance program during the week. Besides all that Vic does for me, I also want to thank John Tweed at Landair Transport Inc. for what he does for me, and also all of the guys who help work on the car — Justin Kidwell, Rodney Justice, Josh Bible, Tony Price, Ricky Thornburg and Marty Evans.”

Shanon Buckingham of Morristown is no stranger to victory lane at Volunteer Speedway, after all he recorded nine victories out of the 12 weekly events he competed in at the track last year. But the man with the target on his back thus far in 2007 is Dale Ball, the winner of three straight “Ramey Ford” Crate Late Model features entering the Kerry Jones Trucking Night at the Races sponsored evening of racing at “The Gap.”

With a stellar field of Crate Late Model competitors present, Buckingham set quick-time of 13.824-seconds (104.170 mph) to grab the pole position for the 25-lap feature, with Ball timing-in second fastest to earn the right to start alongside of Buckingham on the first row.

Buckingham and Ball raced off into the first turn side-by-side, but Buckingham flexed his muscle to power into the lead over Ball racing off turn two down the backstretch. Completing the first lap the duo was trailed by Bobby Mays, Jerry Broyles and Chris Chandler.

Only a couple of laps into the race the caution waved when Rusty Fox slowed on the high-side between turns one and two, slowly coasting with mechanical problems. But by that time all eyes were focused on Allen Champ, the 2005 divisional champion who had started the feature from the ninth spot. When the yellow was unfurled Champ had closed to the rear bumper of Vic Chandler, who had passed his brother Chris Chandler to move into fifth, while also opening the door for Champ to come along for the ride and pull into sixth in the running order when he passed Chris Chandler for position.

Back under green it was all Buckingham, who easily pulled out ahead of Ball, who was followed by Broyles and Mays. Champ wasted no time cracking the top-five, as he quickly disposed of Vic Chandler. Next in his sights was Mays, and Champ pulled the trigger to shoot past Mays on the ninth lap racing off the fourth turn to advance another spot into fourth.

Still riding a strong mount, Champ worked his way around Broyles on lap 10 to move into third. Next in line for Champ was the second-running Ball, and the caution waved for a spin by a lapped car between turns three and four on lap 13 to tighten the field for yet another restart.

Buckingham was riding on the point, followed by Ball and Champ. With the green flag waving Buckingham led the field off into the first turn, and Champ drove in down low to the inside of Ball making hard contact on the driver’s side, forcing Ball up the track and allowing Champ to scoot past into the runner-up spot. Ball chased Champ down and regained the position with a pass between turns three and four on lap 16.

With Buckingham, driving the S & S Millwright/Starrette Trucking/R.W. Powell Construction/Volunteer Chevrolet/Malar Lighting/Volunteer Performance Racing Engines/Swaggerty Farm Sausage/Lakeway Auto/Vietnam Vets MC/Barry Wright Race Cars/No. 44 Monte Carlo pulling out to a 10 car-length lead over Ball, who had put a few car lengths between himself and the third-running Champ, a late race caution waved on lap 22.

Seeing the yellow wave was the last thing Buckingham wanted to see, with the checkers almost in sight. Poised to make a strong run to the checkers, Buckingham stood on the gas racing off the fourth turn at the waving of the green. Also standing on the gas was Champ, who earlier in the feature had driven off into the first turn to the inside of Ball on a restart.

Buckingham was easily ahead of what was happening behind him. Racing into the first turn and with Ball holding his line down on the bottom, Champ dove to the inside — thus getting into the driver’s side of Ball, forcing him up the track. With Champ taking advantage to move into second, Ball, obviously unhappy with the actions of Champ, got back in the throttle and caught Champ midway down the backstretch, where they tangled with both cars spinning in turn three.

Attempting once more to go back green for the final sprint to the checkers, Buckingham easily held off Vic Chandler, Warren McMahan, Broyles and Chris Chandler for his first win of the season.

Finishing sixth through tenth, respectively, were Mays, Brad Kenyon, Tony Trent, Todd Brooks and James Cole.

Mike Hodges of Morristown pocketed the $100 for earning the pole position for the “Rusty Wallace Toyota” Hobby Stock feature, and he also led wire-to-wire in winning the 20-lap event for his second victory of the season. Hodges was chased to the checkers by Jesse Helton, Jamie Whitt, Phillip Nichols and Dustin Shaver.

Kevin Atwell of Rural Retreat, Va., captured his third “Century 21 Masengil-McCrary Realtors” Mini Stock feature win, easily outdistancing Randy Lane, Brent Hensley, Allen Carrier and Toby Jones for the victory.

Newport’s Wayne James held off Jerry Broyles, Danny James, Larry James and Robert Skinner for the “Lawson Chevrolet” Open Wheel Modified feature win.
