Volunteer Speedway’s ‘Scorcher 100’ to pay $30,000 to win
BULLS GAP, Tenn. – During Volunteer Speedway’s tradition-steeped history the track has hosted many special events and all the major touring series’ including, the National Dirt Racing Association (NDRA), Hav-A-Tampa Dirt Racing Series, United Dirt Track Racing Association (UDTRA), Short Track Auto Racing Stars (STARS), World of Outlaws Late Model Series, and the Southern All-Stars Dirt Racing Series. Included among the special events are many races over the years paying $10,000 to win, $15,000 and even $20,000 to win shows.
Race fans from all 50 states and also from several foreign countries visit the East Tennessee region two times a year for the NASCAR racing at nearby Bristol Motor Speedway. With Volunteer Speedway hosting big-purse special events during mid-week the past two years during August race-week at Bristol, many out-of-state fans in the region for the NASCAR action have taken the short drive down Interstate 81 to take in a night of exciting dirt racing.
Dirt Late Model racers and fans from all across the United States are expected to head to “The Gap” for the 2005 version of the Scorcher 100. Track owner Joe Loven has announced the race will offer over a $100,000 purse which will pay $30,000 to win and $2,000 to the last place finisher in the 24-car field, thus making it the biggest dirt Late Model race to ever be held in the Volunteer State.
The Scorcher 100 is scheduled for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, Aug. 23-25.
Tuesday, Aug. 23 will be a night of open practice for all Scorcher 100 entrants, along with a 25-lap Limited (Crate) Late Model feature. Grandstand admission on Tuesday is $10, with pit admission and backside tier-parking $20.
On Wednesday, Aug. 24, Scorcher 100 Super Late Model qualifying and heat races are scheduled, along with Hobby Stock and Mini Stock features. The Hobby Stock and Mini Stock (this will be a points race) competitors will not qualify, but instead will line up for their feature event according to the current point standings. Grandstand admission on Wednesday is $15, with pit admission and backside tier-parking $25.
Highlighting the Thursday, Aug. 25 night of racing will be the $30,000 to win Scorcher 100. The evening will begin with last chance consolation(s) to complete the 24-car starting field for the Scorcher 100. Also in action will be the UMP (Open-Wheel) Modifieds as they will run a 25-lap feature event. Grandstand admission on Thursday is $25, with pit admission and backside tier-parking $35.
The pit gate will open daily at 3 p.m. and the grandstand gate opens at 5 p.m. Hotlaps are “tentatively” scheduled to begin each evening at 6:30 p.m. In case of inclement weather, the race will be run the following day(s).
A limited number of advance reserved seats will be sold for the Scorcher 100; the tower (orange backed) seats in turn four and in turn one above the main grandstands. Reserved seats must be purchased for both nights (Wednesday and Thursday}, and the price for both nights reserved ticket is $50. A three-night admission ticket for the enclosed (air-conditioned) suite, above the tower seats in turn one, will be available for $125. There will only be 36 suite seats sold.

“I’ve wanted to have a big race at ‘The Gap’ for quite awhile now, but I knew before we could host a show as big as what this ‘Scorcher 100’ will be, I had to upgrade the facility and the surrounding grounds first,” said Loven. “During the past couple of months we’ve moved an awful lot of earth at the track, expanding the upper (fan) parking area by approximately 150-175 parking spaces. Even though we are in the middle of the racing season, work around the track will continue.
“We will have a campground completed down in the lower parking area by the time the ‘Scorcher 100’ gets here, plus if all things go according to plan with this major facility overhaul, we will have an expanded outer backside pit parking area. Down around the new entrance to the track, we hope to have the landscaping done to spruce up the overall appearance around the grounds, plus put some coats of new paint on the walls around the track. I'd like to put some new clay on the track, but that's something that we'll just have to determine later. My intentions were to put new clay down prior to the start of the racing season, but the weather just didn't cooperate. It’s just been too wet, one of the wettest spring's in several years. Fans and competitors alike will notice each week when they come to the track the ongoing work, and once we get everything completed it’s going to be nice.”
