Vote For Magazine Cover
ESPN the Magazine has nominated Juan Pablo Montoya, driver of the No. 42 Texaco/Havoline Dodge, as one of five athletes for its NEXT issue. The trademark issue, which will hit stands Jan. 31, looks ahead and identifies those athletes whose talent and style will shape the landscape of sports in the years to come. Montoya will become the first Formula One regular to race full time on the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup circuit when he takes the green flag at the season-opening Daytona 500 this February.
The NEXT athlete is determined by a fan vote at (www.espn.com/next2007) and, once designated, will be featured on the cover of ESPN the Magazine’s NEXT issue. Voting begins Jan. 10 and runs through Jan. 17.
Montoya will be competing against baseball player Jose Reyes of the New York Mets, basketball player Dwight Howard of the Orlando Magic, Calvin Johnson a football player from Georgia Tech and hockey player Evgeni Malkin of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Previous NEXT cover athletes include Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Yao Ming, Alex Rodriguez and Brian Urlacher.
(as an aside, Calvin Johnson has decided to forgo his Senior year at GA Tech and go Pro in the NFL)
