Waltrip's carb pulled after pre-qualifying check

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - NASCAR officials confiscated the carburetor from Michael Waltrip's No. 15 Chevrolet during pre-qualifying inspection Thursday morning at Daytona International Speedway.
Winston Cup series director John Darby said the carburetor had problems with openings through which air travels. Larger openings theoretically can mean increased horsepower, especially at Daytona and Talladega where NASCAR mandates speed-reducing carburetor restrictor plates.

Darby said Waltrip's Dale Earnhardt Inc.-owned team will likely be penalized. No penalties are expected until early next week, however.

Waltrip, who won the season-opening Daytona 500, said he was not aware of any problems on his car when asked about it Thursday afternoon.

Waltrip is currently fifth in series points, 372 behind leader Matt Kenseth. Waltrip's car was also found to have unapproved window braces.

The carburetor, as well as other unapproved parts confiscated Thursday, will be placed on display at the NASCAR hauler on Friday, Darby said.

Thats not a big deal. Nascar's always taking things off cars in prerace inspections. I wonder if this is going to qualify for one of their 25 point penalties. I don't think it will though.

Well with all the people that accuse DEI of cheating at plate races,I think Some of them will try to use this as evidence to back up their claims. I don't think DEI cheats, just so you know.

Its more a Car Chief thing, so I wouldnt really blame it on Michael, unless he's THAT desperate to win.

I seriosly doubt that Michael himself actually did it. It is always the crew or whatever.

Since it happened before the car even got on the track, more than likely it will be a hefty fine.
Last year didn't they take points from Jimmie Johnson for a pre qualifying thing?

I might be wrong here but I think it was Rusty who they took points from. I'm not 100% sure on that, I'll have to check :micro:

Jimmie johnson was the first one fined 25 driver points, then rusty after him.

As long as they don't find something illegal on MW's car after the race, I don't really care. I just hope that MW will not get any points deducted since he is sitting 5th in the points.
