Rate the Daytona 500 if you wish :beerbang:

I'll give it a 9 for the drama, 10 for Jeff winning, and 8 for the retiring guys.

ON TO CAIFORNIA!!!!!!

I'll give it an 8 for the overall race (still not enuff passing, for the lead or otherwise)

7.5, lots of crashes! J.R. also placee in the top five, so that's another good thing!

I'm easy, I guess! :) Maybe it's because it's the first points race of the year and that I happen to like the plate tracks, but I'm going with a 9! Sure there were boring moments........any 500 mile race has those!! But, if that finish wasn't exciting enough for you, then I think you might have a problem with excitement!! :beerbang:

The Great American Race.......could have gone to a 10 if the Bud car had pulled off the win!! :D

Hey DEW, I like Jimmy a lot as a commentator on speed, and I really thought he had won the truck race until I saw the films.

I will give it an 8. Got to be pretty exciting at the end. Good start for Jeff.

Excelent statement! I love exciting races.

I will give it a 8.5 even if my guy had such a bad day. Got taken out in the mini-big one.

I'll give a 9, very exciting ending. but passing on the outside seemed to be a big risk, even for the best cars.
just the fact that the season has started is a 10 in itself.
:beerbang: :beerbang: :beerbang:

Well I got so tired of hearing the booth talking about how good SMOKE was and how he had won this and how he had won that and how he took a car out of storage and won something else... Then the only race car driver with 70 CUP wins came to the front and won the race...
OK booth guys just how good is that SMOKE guy now? Next race will you talk about those 70 wins and how it is unlikely ANYONE will ever top that?
I gave it two scores about a 5 for no competition during the race and a 10 for Jeffy winning his 70th!

We need a thread to rate the coverage.......I thought this was a thread to rate the race. ;)

Coverage? As long as DW is speaking........about -5!! :beerbang:

i'd have to give it a ten just because its the 1st race or the year.......

-1.5 for lack of passing might aswell have been the daytona 50 nothing happened till the last 50 laps...... and the camera seemed to be in the wrong place at the wrong time when something did happen..........

- another 1.5 for air time guess i was the only one who noticed ( 4 minutes of racing 5 minutes of comercials )

-.5 for waltrip boogidy boogidy boogidy grow up darrell

guess that makes it a 6.5 hanging my head

o damn almost forgot -.5 for pre race b.s. had everything but a janet jackson outfit malfunction ( i ) LOL..

( 6 ) over all

Oh God X4! I hope Darrell never has an outfit malfunction! Now that would be entirely too much.

Did anybody see the overhead shots by that "zip cam"? They were AWESOME! Who saw the race in HDTV?

I don't remember hearing DW's "BBB", but heck, i'll take three DW's all day long over one Benny Parsons for 20 minutes

I kinda hate to say it, but I agree with Axel.....DW may be "Jaws" and may play the fool, but Benny is much more out of touch....jmo.

I'll give it a 9, I thought it was a real good race for an RP race.

Had some boring parts but overall I'll give it a 9. Kurt came thru at the end protecting JG's hind quarters where his own running mate couldn't keep up. But, at least JJ came thru holding off Smoke. Lil'E finishing 3rd was disappointing - I'd rather he have kept his car that Mikey blew up in (but that's just me, I guess).
The Fox broadcast was OK, and that's being generous. I only hope that who ever put together Black, some piano guy, Wilson and Williams should be fired. Wilson is a prime example of what too many drugs will do. Williams never has been able to sing. I don't even know who the piano guy was. And, Black, after his wife Lisa has trashed his career for a decade, was the only one to do a decent job and I don't even like CM.

i give it a 7 even though i wasn't looking forward for jeff gordon to win

I didnt much care for the racing, i think the busch race was about 10 times better so ill rate it a 5. the truck race was awsome too

emon I'll second that! A BIG thumbs-up for the trucks.. thrilling to watch, old time racing at it's best.. A 10 only because there is no 20!

I agree,Jeff Gordon winning any race is always a 10 in My book, but still a boring fake plate race that rates a 5 and that's as high as I'll rate any plate event.

I got tired of hearing from Jr in the pre-race shows,I was thinking They ought to rename it the "Memorial Dale Earnhardt Jr. Cup Series",ggeeeezzzzzz, made it that much sweeter when Jeff and Kurt both beat out alimighty(LOL)Jr. :p :D
Jr. says it's His house, but I believe that HMS is housesitting lately,a lot,LOL

Remember that post, 24thunder, next February when they are tooting Jeff's horn all pre-race! :) Jr was the defending Champion of the preceding Daytona 500......it was hype for the upcoming show. Next year it will Jeff as not only the defending Champion of the Daytona 500 but also three time winner of the Daytona 500. Talk about hype!! :D But who can blame any network for hyping up the biggest race of the season.........which is also the first race of the season? :beerbang: :beerbang:

Maybe so but WE all know it is just another race... There is only ONE reason it is such a big to do.. It is all advertising, getting the fans excited about the new season.. Just another race that takes weeks to get done. I think the Brickyard is a much more memorable race! There is a basis there of real racing. Imagine drinking that milk.. Ohhh yeah.
Betsy

Drinking the milk is an open wheel thing............throwing your gatorade bottle is a NASCAR thing!! :D

Actually, the Brickyard is way less of a tradition in stock cars. They ain't even been racing there that long. I'm not sure by any means but I think it's about 15 years. The track was built for light cars with big, big tires.......flat and almost perfectly symetrical!! It's a challenge to get a stock car around it fast......which makes it a fun race to watch. But, it just ain't the biggest NASCAR race..........never will be either.

August 1st, 1994 was the first Brickyard 400.

it's not the biggest race in NASCAR, it's dam near then top 3 tho. it's grow'n in popularity.

it out sells the Indy 500 in people watching from the stands and on TV. :D

Thanks Alverez.........I thought it was first run early 90's. But '94 only makes my point more........it's a new track on the circuit compared to many we race on. And I can believe the larger audience when you put TV into it......that is part of that marketing genius of the Frances. :) But, lets not drift into that NA$CA$H stuff. :D

Daytona IS the place to win and the 500 is even better. Talk to any of the drivers, ask what race they could win if they only had one to win and most, if not all will say the Daytona 500. The Indy race is big because of the tradition of the track, the hype and the money.

The fans are becoming younger and younger, just like the drivers and their priorities change just like everything else. When Bill Elliott won the Winston Million, he won three of four races that were part of that special program. Those tracks were changed later on, and today, the one that was the most special of that program is no longer even on the schedule.

Many, and I mean many of the seats sold at the Indy race are sold or given away to fans that are not all that much of fans of NASCAR. I'm not saying that most of them are casual fans, but if a fan had tickets yearly to the Indy 500, they were offered tickets to the Brickyard 400. Those people who had season tickets to the Indy 500 were mostly interested in open wheel racing and took advantage of the offer.

If you ask fans of today to list in order their preferences of the tracks, you will see a difference from fans of old and I'm sure that in the future, you'll see fans change again. However, as long as NASCAR holds the opening race at Daytona and it's hyped as it is now, I'll be that it will continue to be the top race of the year.
