New 500 MM lens came in today.

It's actually surprisingly light. It's all manual, so there's no electronics/servos/ect to weigh the lens down.

Being 500MM, tripod is pretty much required. Monopod can work if you have a steady hand.

shipping weight was 2.0 pounds. My 18-55 and 75-300 EFS lenses together are about the same weight as the 500 and body mounted together.
 
I shot these for my first weekend out last weekend with the 75-300. Looks like this sunday will be too cold to go out with the 500, though.

Nice. I remember manually adjusting a camera. I still have a collection of film cameras. (I was factory technician fixing high speed film printing equipment for many years).
 
The planes were a good 1/2-3/4-1 mile away. Google Earth says the steeple is exactly 800 feet away, I'm not sure what set of solar panels I got in-frame to measure their distance (180 ft, 225 ft, 300 ft, 345 ft).
