Ward Eases the Burden

Ever since I bought my new Dakota last fall, I've been getting the Dodge magazine from my dealer and there was a touching 'Letter to the Editor' about Ward in the latest issue. (I'll leave the folks names out)

"At an autograph session last fall with Ward Burton (driver of the No. 22 Caterpillar Dodge Intrepid R/T), Mr. Burton noticed our 6-year-old son, and 4-year-old daughter, had cleft lips and cleft palates. After the signing, he told us he wanted to help get medical care for them. Thanks to him, the Shriners Hospitals for Children is involved, and our children will get excellent care. We've always loved NASCAR drivers. But to have something like this done for your family-there are no words, Mr. Burton, except thank you, from the bottoms of our hearts."

Ward Burton responds: "Because of the business I'm in, I'm sometimes able to make a difference in people's lives. These kids were so full of life. I was touched and was lucky enough to be able to help. I know the Shriners feel privileged to help, too."

I realize this happens quite a bit, but it's nice to read when the drivers get recognized for their efforts. :)

Things like this, is the true measurement of a man.

To often we hear stories, and experience people crushing all those around them, to make themselves the big person.
All they will ever be is a big person among the cripples they created.

True success is to lift all around you up, to help them be all they can be. This creates a far superior feeling of being a Giant amoung strong big people, that they helped create.

In a day when all around we see people taking advantage of others, war, hatred, it is so encouraging to hear of things like this.

GO WARD! :lilangel:

I was there that night, and got his autograph!! It was in Kansas City. I never saw the kid though. Thats was great, and he was nicer than I thought he would be. I too, am glad that great things like this are recognized.

Not sure how many of you are familiar with the Shriners and what they do. Many think they only participate in parades dressed as clowns. But the Shriners offer a more serious and deeper service in addition to making people laugh.

The Shrine is an organization that own and operate several hospitals that specialize in the treatment of crippled children and burns. There is no charge to the patient for these services.

Although it is required a person be a member of the Masonic Fraternity to be a Shriner, the same does not hold true for those who receive treatment from the hospitals or any member of thier family. The only requirement is they be unable to afford the care they receive. Race, religion or belonging to the Masonic fraternity are NOT a consideration to be eligible for treatment by a Shriner hospital.

Ward Burton knew the steps to take to contact the Shrine to provide treatment for these youngsters, and the Shriners paid the bill. Three cheers for Ward for knowing where to turn and "atta boys" all around for every Shriner who, through thier generousity make this wonderful service available to those less fortunate than others.

What a wonderful and uplifting story. The shiners are an awesome organization. The money for the medical care has to come from somewhere, so I hope this reminds us all to do our part and contribute what and when we can.
Go Ward.

:salute:

So many times you hear of athletes being charged with drugs, rape or whatever. It's so good to hear of such a great thing being done especially coming from a Nascar driver. :salute: BLESS YOU WARD!!!!!!!!!

Thkx Whiz! I'm well aware of what the Shriners do since my Dad has had the Milwaukee season tickets for the Green Bay Packers football games as far as I can remember & the pre-season game in Milwaukee & now the game we get up at GB for pre-season is always been the 'Shriners game'.

My wife's family were friends with one of the gals that was named Shriner's Queen for one of the games also. :)
