When Denny Hamlin returned, it seemed like he'd easily get back into the Chase. Then he just dropped off the face of the earth and now he has trouble finishing races and in the top 20. What happened?

Easily? He was 28th in points when he returned at Talladega. I think it was more like 'highly doubtful' that he could make the Chase. It was mathematically possible but that's about it.

Side note though..... I really wish he had made the Chase and even went as far to become the 2013 NASCAR Champion. It would have clearly shown, to those that aren't blind, what a effed up idea it is to have a playoff system in NASCAR. Sorry, I'll save that for the next 'Hate the Chase' thread. Carry on.

LOL... I dont like theguy but I thought it would have been cool to see someone miss races and win the championship.. or even make the chase..

When he wrecked at Dover, he was 34 points behind 20th as they were running. That's when things started to go downhill.

Yeah, I wanted to see that happen too, just to see the interesting discussion it would have started. Oh well.

I don't necessarily think he's fallen off due to fear, Slice. I think he's just playing injured, so to speak, and it's affecting his driving ability. Granted, I'm no expert, doctor, driver, or analyst - just a dude with an opinion posting on a message board - but he needs to get that surgery done and over with so he can recover and get back to being 100%, or as close to that as he can be.

Yeah thats kinda what I mean. Not necessarily scared, but his aggressiveness has come down a notch because he's still hurt... he needs that surgery and I think hes a fool to risk his career just to "finish out the year for the sponsors".

I guarantee he was never fully healed. No athlete can stay away from his passion for too long. Just as an example I've played through soccer playoffs with a broken foot. I was nowhere near 100% but it hurts more not to play. He'll be back next year so watch out.

He is probably running not to get hurt more. His driving has a Days of Thunder vibe - we are waiting for him to Drive Though It.

I think his arrogance got the better of him.

An ego as big as Hamlin has is hard to keep in check. He probably thought he could come back and win races like he did when he had that surgery on his knee or ankle or whatever it was a few years ago.

One must know their limitations.

Yes, I think Gibbs should of made him get the surgery and have been cleared 100% before coming back, he's taken some hard hits since coming back one more bad lick and he will be on the sidelines permanently

I still have to go back to his statements about having a girlfriend and a child after the accident. That was, and still is, a bizarre thing to say.

I don't think he's having fun anymore. It's a job now.

I think he understands that one more bad wreck and he could be deceased or a vegetable, he In My Opinion, needs to stop racing and get his health back before he gets hurt beyond repair.

Kinda reminds me of what happened to Sterling Marlin in '02. He was having a great couple of years and may very well have won the 2002 championship, until he injured his neck at Kansas. He eventually came back, but never was the same after that. I know Denny is a lot younger now than Sterling was at that time, but the after-effects look eerily similar.
