Basketball Player Drops Pot During Game
Tue Mar 11, 8:08 AM ET
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - A high school basketball player has been suspended after dropping something during a tournament game: a small bag of marijuana.
Officials at Ottawa Hills High School met Monday morning to inform the student and his parents of the discipline, said Sue Krieger, a spokeswoman for Grand Rapids Public Schools.
The school is recommending that the student be expelled, Krieger said. She said he has the right to appeal.
The player, a senior at Ottawa Hills, admitted that it was his marijuana that turned up during Friday's Class A district boys championship game between the Indians and Northview High School, Krieger said. Northview won the game 55-53.
The Kent County prosecutor's office has not decided whether to seek criminal charges against the student, whose name and age were not released.
The marijuana was discovered after a first-quarter scuffle for the ball. A photographer with The Grand Rapids Press noticed what he believed to be litter on the court and alerted a referee.
