Was this the last straw for Jeff Gordon's title hopes?

I know he can still win the Cup (at least mathematically). But, it just got a whole lot harder after today. He is now like 193 points back. I think he could certainly catch a few of those ahead of him, but it would take some very bad fortune by virtually all of the top 5 or so for him to overtake everybody. I suppose it is not the end of the world, but it still sucks!

On the flip side, the top two guys in the points are two of my favorites. I would love to see Jimmie Johnson win it all. Mostly because he is Jeff's teammate, but also because he is a very good driver and a really good guy. I would almost rather see Mark Martin finally win a Cup than Jeff though. Mark is a great guy and a very CLEAN driver. He obviously has a few less chances left than Jeff is likely to have. But then, Jeff is going for 8 championships and to get there you need to capitalize on every opportunity.

I'd say it's between Martin and Stewart at this point.

Johnson will fade with this last push and Martin will edge out Stewart.

He's not out of it yet.. He looks really hungry and mad .. And that's not good for the rest of the teams..

I think the title belongs to Stewart. Mark is not going to last and Jimmie doesn't have enough sperience.

I agree with you about Martin, would be nice to see him win the Cup title. He's loaded with class.

But on the other hand, I sure wouldn't mind seeing that rookie JJ steal the show. Well Paul, perhaps there are a few more pushes in there for JJ ;)
This has been a great points race this year. Who knows, perhaps misfortune will fall on others as well, and that #24 will come sneaking in there :)

Technically, NO, but it is still very close.

GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO 24 and also GOOD LUCK 48 and 6.

My head says it's going to be Mark or Tony. But my heart says Jeff all the way. Sometimes you must forgo logic in favor of heart. So.... go Jeff:victory:

Looks bleak with 5 guys ahead, but I never count him out. 8 more to go. Hopefully the trouble is gone, if not, I hope JJ takes it. Martin also would be great. He would have won in 98 if it weren't for Gordon's complete dominance that year. Stewy could do it, but I just don't think he will. Marlin has lost his fire, you can see it in his eyes.:)

I agree, Gordon Fan. Sterling has lost the fire. I think he is still one hurting puppy from the last wreck. The pressure is getting to him. I know he will continue to fight, but I don't think he'll be there at the end.

if you saw in his interview afterwards he said he has to win kansas or basically else

Stewart might be where the smart money is. But that doesn't mean I have to like it:eek:

This race is awesome though. Who'd a thunk that with like 10 races to go 5 guys would have a legitimate shot to win the Championship? When I went to Martinville last fall the points race was pretty much wrapped up. This year it will mean an awefull lot. Sounds like it will be even more interesting this year.:)

Head Table for ALL top 10, and I agree that Sterling seems to have lost the fire.

making up close to 200 points in 8 races is a huge stretch. maybe a few years back when the 24 was THE CAR, but not this year.

I'm figuring Jack in The Hat is going to be throwing his entire organzation behind Mark Martin and that his team-mates are going to help in any way they can including on track. Probably no team orders or anything like that but a little bump here, and a little bump there goes a long way.

people count out jimmy to quickly, records are made to be broken....

Surprised to see Jimmie dismissed with this being his 'last push'. Is this based on his rookie status? Otherwise, I don't understand it.

I favor Mark Martin over the short haul. I do think Stewart has a great shot, but will be surprised at none of the top five. All worthy candidates.

No it's not based on his rookie status. I don't think Sterling is going to hang in there (has nothing to do with it being his 26th year in racing), I think he's moving downward. I don't think Johnson will keep it consistant for the rest of the year, I don't think Stewart will keep it consistant (has nothing to do with this being his 4th year in racing). I think it's Martin's year.

I think blah blah blah, and blah blah blah if blah blah blah.
It ain't over till it's over, but I still think with Nascar giving out fines, and penealty the way they are this year that the cleanest driver, and smartest team, will win it all.;)

I'm going out on alimb here and saying someone from the top 10 in points will be the champ. Remember how far back Kulwicki was in 92????????????
