Going to try to youtube every D500 from 79-16 and atleast watch the beginning and the end of the races....having withdrawals haha. If I can do this over the next 12 days until the cars are on track again I might survive ;)

Anyone else ready for the season to begin????

I have been ready since the last race !!

Yep, Jimmy got his first win and it was a great battle at the finish. It sucks that Ernie Irvan got seriously hurt at Michigan a month later, I think he would have beaten out Earnhardt for the '94 Championship had that not happened.

Been ranting about that for years:)

So far I have watched 79-81 and working on 82 although 79-80 picure is so poor its hard to watch. The Rainer racing Gm car has sat on the pole for four years in a row and its always a rocketship. Baker drove the car in the 79-80, Bobby in 81 and Parsons in 82. Drivers switched rides like crazy. Cool to see the transition from guys like Pearson to Earnhardt. Really only two competitive Fords in the woods and moore. Cars changed to the smaller wheel based cars in 81. I've never experienced these races before now.

I was always FoMoCo since I started watching in the early to mid sixties..... The late 70's was when I quit watching till '85 when the Elliotts showed up...... as you mentioned....... had it not been for Bud Moore and the Wood Brothers.... (bless their hearts for sticking thru thick and thin)....... FoMoCo might as well have just been non existent.

(Warning if anyone is bothered by Histrionics or maybe a little self indulgence, it might be best to skip this post).

The 1981 Daytona 500 had many great story lines.
-Richard Petty and Dale Inman's final race together for the win. That was the end of a glorious age imo. They may have ran a few more later on, but that was more like a footnote in comparison

-Bobby Allison in the Ranier car showed up with a Pontiac Lemans. They caught everyone off guard with the choice of an aerodynamically superior car. They were the fastest and It was there race to loose, Inman made a great call on the final stop to beat them.

The downsized cars. It was almost like a whole new word. Bobby eventually went to running a Buick Regal. I agree drivers, teams and cars seemed to change more often then. Especially Allison.

Personally another highlight from the era was Dick Berggren's Stock Magazine. I would like to say all my memories were direct recollections of the 1981 race, and I still remember the race. But the magazines really bought the closure to me. The Daytona one probably didnt hit the stands until late March, maybe in April. But they were well worth the wait. They always provided great insights that I couldn't get anywhere else.
I still remember reading about many of the 500 teams getting there Daytona Cars built by Mike Laughlin racing. I always loved finding out about those details.

Great stuff!

Probably that 81 race is what convinced me to go
to my first NASCAR race : 1982 Daytona 500.(35 years ago!)
I guess I have done 3 or 4 more D500's since then.
Last one was'97 when DE#3 rolled it on the back
stretch and drove it back to the pits.

One more (painful) week to go.
