Denny says he's not getting the best stuff these days. Interesting article on Denny's 'sacrifice'.

Denny Hamlin hadn't missed the Chase for the Sprint Cup before this season, but he was fully aware of the consequences.

When the two cars earmarked for his No. 11 team during the Chase were reassigned to championship-contending Joe Gibbs Racing teammates Kyle Busch and Matt Kenseth after showing better potential in simulations, Hamlin willingly conceded.

"Every new great car, I'm not on the priority list," he told USA TODAY Sports in a phone interview Thursday. "We had to give up some of our best cars to our teammates because that's just the way it works. Last year in the Chase, we took some of Joey (Logano)'s cars. You've got to earn your spot. We didn't perform well. Now we have to be good teammates."

FWIW. Why should get get the "best stuff"? He's 25th in points with no chance of winning the championship. He had no problem getting the "best stuff" from his teammates in prior years. I have a feeling he's going to be low man on the totem pole next year.
 
I wonder how fed ex likes knowing they are running lesser equipment. I am surprised denny even said all this stuff. the truth of the matter is there isn't that many teams running brand new cars in a given week. I look at the chassis selections every week. Penske by far runs the most new cars, between the 2 teams in a given week they are probably going to race at least one new car. Hendrick is probably next but again they have 4 teams. SHR since they first started out and even during tony's title run tend to run alot of older cars. I would say SHR runs the oldest cars out of the top teams. Their strategy is likely lets massage and tinker with the cars we already bought from HMS. The difference in an older car and a newer one isn't that big of a deal. I don't see what denny is even talking about. I do see TRD putting more of an experimental engine package in dennys car but to say he is getting sucky equipment that can't win races, is probably wining
 
I swore for years Terry Labonte was getting the sweepings off the floor at HMS. I am sure it happens to some degree but the best cars should get the best stuff chase time.
 
If he was whining about giving the best gear to Kenseth and Busch, what was his Logano comment all about...whining as well? LOL
 
Can someone explain to me how one particular chassis shows "more potential" than another? In theory they should be built to the exact same specs. I don't understand how one would be considered better than the other.

I don't think they are built to the exact same specs. Most engineering has tolerances, a nominal dimension with a plus and minus tolerance that is still within specs.
 
A chassis builder can build a chassis on the same jig, using the same welder, to the same specs and everyone will still perform a little different. Plus, Nascar chassis are a lot more complex then a drag racing chassis.

Ok, but I'm wondering where there are determining to have better "potential". Are they talking about aero? What do they look at and say chassis X is better than chassis Y
 
normally these types of things are only found out by racing the chassis. denny is wining.

they have computer simulations, bumps and all, load the chassis on the curves, the whole bit...multi million dollar pieces of equipment to test the chassis. Wind tunnel's for testing aero.
 
If you've ever been to the shops where chassis are built, they are all the same when they leave the shop. They are then rolled to the particular shop where all the rest of the fittings are done. It is a bare bones steel cage when it leaves the build shop. The jig is the same for every one.
The only differences come when each team receives the chassis --- they do all the finish work. If it's "lesser" equipment, it's because each team does things differently.
 
I think that Denny is working on the theory (not fact) that every car that is built is minutely improved over the previous cars . Generally ,the difference one to the other is so slight that the differences aren't measurable , but over the course of a year , it might be measurable .In any event ,all drivers will tell you they have their favorite chassis' and they may not be the newest. Denny may have given up one or two of his favorite chassis' , but there is no way he is getting less than top notch equipment.

I suppose so.

Add to that having 5 cars was a chore too. I mean, how do you keep 5 cars fast in a consistent basis? I dont care if you're Hendrick or Roush. Its just a hard thing to do.

Anyway, back on topic..

I dont think this is some hidden secret. It is well known that the guy who's left out of the chase is always the sacrificial lamb. Gordon had to pony up his cars and even crew at one point or another to help Jimmie do better.
 
Not all of the cars are built to the same specifications. Some cars are dedicated short-track cars, and others are dedicated super-speedway cars. There are some major differences between the two types.
here is probably all you would ever want to know about a Nascar chassis for the layman. they do say the largest tolerance is .25- a 1/4 of an inch. doesn't say if that is .25 plus and minus which would be 1/2" total or 1/8" plus or minus which would be .25" total tolerance. They don't say either where this largest tolerance is applied

that was a recent video too, you can tell the extra top windshield bar. the super speedway cars normally have more body bracing this helps the body to keep from flapping around so much. otherwise they normally want the weight as low as possible. the more ballast the better. I think alot of the reason why a drive might like a car better than another may have to do with the way the seat, pedals, steering wheel etc are mounted in the car. it just feels good to them I think denny needs to be benched his head is not in it.
 
I think this is race manipulation. JGR should be providing the same equipment to all drivers so they can all give 100%. They're manipulating their equipment so the drivers in the Chase have the best stuff!

remember when a really great chassis had a name.....not number ! ha!

Somebody call the Concord district attorney! I want a grand jury indictment against Joe Gibbs Racing! Write to FedEx! The team they sponsor isn't giving 100%! This is disgusting! Race fixing! Race manipulation! Why wouldn't Hamlin be given 100% equipment to try to win the race! This is worse travesty in sport!
 
Denny is the boy who cried wolf to many times. He just cant let something go, he carries on like a distraught lifetime movie character. Somebody doesn't call him, somebody isnt on his level and he just has to call them out. He cant get over 2010.

The man drives for a great owner, and sponsor, he also has a lot of natural talent. He has an incredibly attractive girlfriend and their child.

He either sucks at PR, or he is one the most uncomfortable drivers I have seen If he hasn't figured out to how be comfortable yet it is never going to happen.
 
Wait..... we are saying that denny is whining and complaining when he is fully aware of his situation and he is referencing that when he was in the chase his team did the same thing? Im pretty sure this is him doing the exact opposite of whining. I know a lot of you dont like him but jesus, at least make a reasonable argument sometimes.

He's just an all around odd guy.

He's one of those people that gives you wierd vibes that he could go mental at any given moment.

He's got some commitment issues too. Marry the girlfriend already.
 
I've heard many a crew chief say that even though these cars are designed and built to be the same, no two ever come out alike. Whether thy determine this through their Shaker Rig or on track testing there are cars that are more favorable over others. I just wonder is Denny simply trying to use this as an excuse for lack of performance. If so, what will be his excuse next year?

True. He may be 3rd in line but he's still getting better gear than David Ragan or Timmy Hill. Maybe he is whining :confused:
 
I'm no NASCAR technician or anything but turning right on a Daytona straightaway isn't exactly the chassis's fault.

When he had Joey he wasn't the #3 but now he's just a third wheel and hes crying because theres no one for him to pick on anymore.
