We Might Not Get To See The Chase Races

The contract between Disney-owned TV networks ABC and ESPN and cable provider Time Warner Cable is set to expire in some markets, including Los Angeles, on September 2nd. What that means is that negotiations are underway, but with the public pulled in.

Both companies have launched websites and marketing campaigns to educate viewers about their side of the issue. Disney's I Have Choices campaign goes for the jugular, pointing out that you don't have to deal with Time Warner Cable. Time Warner on the other hand has its Roll Over or Get Tough website that educates consumers on where money goes when you pay their bill.

Whether it's Time Warner or another company, many customers are exasperated over costly bills because they make you pay for hundreds of channels you'll never watch just to get the one you want. The average customer watches about 17 channels, according to Nielsen.

LA Times columnist David Lazarus says that with competition from the internet, companies are revving up to offer smaller cable packages. But for him, it's not enough.

"Imagine being forced to subscribe to Field & Stream if you want the New Yorker, or being forced to buy a pair of gabardine trousers if you want blue jeans. No consumer would stand for such treatment," he wrote earlier this month. "So why should cable companies get away with it? So-called a la carte cable pricing is the way of the future, especially in an app-happy, iTunes world where media consumers pick and choose what they want to see and hear. The sooner the cable industry accepts this reality, the sooner it can start genuinely competing for increasingly finicky digital subscribers."

with that said I doubt espn gets blacked out both sides need each other I say they get a deal done at the last min.

what you guys think?

Don't have Time Warner and will never do Time warner ever again. So i don't really care.

I have DirecTV --- cable is not an option here, so it doesn't bother me.

Moving to NASCAR forum.
Like I said I doubt anything happens espn would both be fools not to reach agreement. I know for a fact espn would lose alot of viewers and that would cost them big time in the tv ratings.

ESPN is a huge bully. They demand insane prices and know the cable and satellite providers just have to pay up.

Regardless of what happens, count on your Time Warner Cable bill to increase. I have lost at least 10 channels in the past because of "package restructuring" and my bill is almost twice what it was when I moved in here 9 years ago. It's common for TWC to increase your bill while decreasing viewing content.

HATE, HATE, HATE Time Warner with all of my soul. If they were the only option left I would never watch the television again. I hope one day someone figures out a way to put them out of business.

In 2008, (at the time) L.A. City Attorney Rocky Delgadillo sent me a pdf. file of the lawsuit that he brought against Time Warner Cable for illegal business practices ("Business and Professions code sections 17200 et. seq. and 17500 et seq.") In an email I was informed that TWC had been sued and settled out of court for millions MANY times. TWC does and will again break the law. I still have the file saved in MY Documents but the result of the lawsuit was never made public (prolly settled out of court again).

Does anyone actually have a cable/satellite company they are actually happy with?

Everyone seems to hate whatever one they have.

Or decrease your bill a little but offer less, like many food companies do. Make their packaging smaller while cutting the price. A good example of that would be a half gallon of ice cream.....no longer 64 ounces, it is now 48. Cable companies have been fighting the alcarte thing for a long time. They will lose huge amounts of money if this happens. I know I wouldn't have too many channels on my list , maybe 25 tops, of which probably half would be sports channels.

I've opted for Directv. The prices are outrageous for any type of service IMO. I only opted for them because I am able to take it with me wherever I go. It works out great for camping @ the races or simply going to camp for the weekend.

Quite a while back I owned one of those BUD's, Big Ugly Dish's. You know, the ones that are like 10ft in diameter. That thing was great! You could order only the channels that you wanted and it kept the cost way, way down. Watching NASCAR, or any sport for that matter, was fantastic. You were able to catch the feed being sent back to the broadcasting channel free of commercials. It used to be like that for all sports until eventually those feeds became scrambled. I think that it was the NFL that started that, if I remember correctly.

I really don't like the price I have to pay to get TV, and severe weather knocks out my signal, but since I'm in rural East Texas --- if I want TV I have satellite. No other option.

What they should do is let you select your own lineup at a per-channel price, like $1 a channel. I don't need to have 14 spanish speaking channels in my program lineup.

Can you imagine how many of these extra channels would go by the wayside? There are probably a whole lot of channels out there that only a handful of people would pay for.

I have neither but I love Verizon FiOS. I get 20 meg of download speed, no long distance and a butt load of HD channels for around $100 total a month. The local channels are free.

I would get fios but the problem is they don't supply any of the MSG channels in HD where I'm at so I can't watch the local hockey games in HD. If they ever add those channels I will probably switch. I'm stuck with Time Warner myself right now.

My cable bill would be cheap.
