... on who will be calling the races in the 2008 Chase for the Sprint Cup Series Championship.

Earlier this week, it was noted that ESPN would make an announcment THIS WEEK on who the commentators would be. It's also expected that ESPN/ABC will use TWO DIFFERENT crews, that way the crew will not be burned out already covering the first half of the Nationwide Series.

Marty Reid and Allen Bestwick have been thrown in as possible succedors to Jerry Punch. Allen has more than 15 years of experience behind him and Marty is the commentator for the IndyCar Series on ESPN.

Dale Jarrett's name has been thrown up as a replacement to Rusty Wallace.

However, at this point, nothing is for sure.

WOW, ESPN can't even manage to make an announcement when they plan to. :XXROFL:

just an observation, but what happened to ESPN????? Remember the late 80's and early 90's...... they set the standard for coverage..... then lost the bidding wars, went away...... no they are back, but it aint the same....... then again, neither is NASCAR......lol maybe I'm just gettin old...

Is it going to be like last year when Fox had some races as well as TNT prior to ESPN coverage? I think I read something somewhere, but I CRS.  ;)

So DJ is going to retire after the first five races. That is new to me, but what the hell, I'm not the first to be told things like this anyway. BTW, I thought it was a bit funny that they didn't mention Glenn, Dale's brother, also has been involved in reporting the racing action. I actually like his work and quite frankly, unless DJ gets rid of his many "uh's and ah's", Glenn will in my eyes be a better announcer. But DJ's got lots of time to learn and his father went through the same thing and became a terrific announcer. My best to them all. Great family.

That's great, but why keep Jerry Punch?

I'm glad Crusty's gone, but I don't think Dr. Punch provides anything at all to the broadcast. He used to be great on pit road.

We'll see though.

Suzy being gone is a step up.

I think they should give Mike and Jamie the boot as well.

I know the play by play booth is now full of high school classmates, but I still say Allen is 100x better than Dr. Punch.

Remember the good days of NBC, before Weber got promoted to the booth?

He's a company man. That's how ESPN operates. Look at some of their other people in roles that don't belong, i.e. Mike Tirico on MNF.

So now we've got Bill Weber and Jerry Punch.

I don't mind Weber, but he's definently not the best person at TNT. I'd rather see Ralph Sheheen give the play-by-play.

I am hopeful that after another season, they will move Punch to the studio show and put Bestwick as play-by-play.

Jerry Punch is on a local sports talk show here in Knoxville and he just said ESPN would be doing fewer commercials in their races in '08.

looks better than it was. But who's gonna fill DJ's shoes for the first 5?

Fox has the first races, but I'd say Rusty will still do the Busch races to start out until DJ has finally retired.

They should have two different sets of announcers.

I could see all those guys getting burned down quickly, having to do almost every Nationwide race.

I'm not. I wasn't expecting them to make changes, but I thought that if they ddid the changes would be far more sweeping than this.

I see where ESPN's coming from though. The chemistry between Doc, D.J., and Andy is great. They all went to the same high school from what I heard.

They all did the Phoenix race together and I must say, the commentary in that event wasn't bad. I just think Dr. Punch needs a Full Throttle Energy Drink later in the season. They get burned down and it shows.
