Labonte May Be Next Silly Season Casualty
Two-time Winston Cup champion Terry Labonte, who drives the No. 5 Kellogg's Chevrolet, wants a three-year contract extension from Hendrick Motorsports, but team owner Rick Hendrick may be offering only a one-year deal. Hendrick reportedly has plans to put his son, Busch driver Ricky Hendrick, in the car in 2004.(emphasis added)(Dallas News)(9-20-02)

if he doesnt give him the longer contract will he leave and go to another team or retire is the question.

He shoulda left a long time ago for someone who will give him a decent ride instead of being the R/D man IMO.

Terry still has some fire in him,Why would he retire if he wanted a 3 year deal?I would like to see him go to DEI.;) :)

Gotta admit he had a good gig for a long run TW.

Id love to see Terry Labonte at DEI....but they dont have a car for him.

ive said for years and years he needs to get out of Hendrick and go to a race team that will actually support him.

i gurantee you that as soon as Ricky Hendrick gets the 5 car, that car will be just as good as JJ and JG's cars.....to bad Terry couldnt get those cars.

How can the 5 car be an R&D? Something should have worked by now don't cha think?

Looks to me like Hendricks money goes to Jeff in the most part... But yeah that 5 car has been struggling for a while now. Not sure what it is Terry or the car or maybe both?

If Terry Labonte moves from the #5 ride, it will be interesting to see if anyone else picks him up. It's not that he's not still a talented race car driver, but he just hasn't showed how well he can run these past couple years. With this wave of rookies coming in, to stay in this sport you have to show you are competitive. If they think you are washed up, then it is going to be hard for you to have a choice when you'd like to retire.

I think it's hilarious that some of you think that the #5 is an R & D car. The #25, yea. But the #5, no way. He won a title with that team and your going to tell me that Rick doesn't give him his share of the money. I don't buy it. Jeff Gordon is good, real good. He can do more with the same stuff everybody else struggles with. Now Terry is a great driver and has had one heckuva career but he obviously cannot get the job done these days. I would love to see him win a race. Later today would be great. But I don't think that will happen. Not this year. He either needs to get in a new ride or retire cause him and that team are not working well together.

:leap: I would love to see Terry at DEI. Jack Rouch runs four cars so why cant DEI. :calpping:

Dallas News....bah Humbug!!!

Terrys's contract is in place through next season. Near as I have found no negotiations are in progress at this time beyond that.

The troubles with the Kelloggs team were enumerated many times early this season mostly centering around a reluctance to move past those things which worked in the past but may be uncompetitve in WC today. Recovery from falling behind the times is not often accomplished within one season.

Should the team's performance not improve next season, then Terry may have to have long hard look at his plans. It is my belief that Rick will allow Terry this opportunity.

hopefully Terry will be going else where when his contract is up.......i think he will perform very well...he still has the ability to drive a race car.....i havent given up on him.

ive heard he drove the 25 car for a lap or two when Jerry Nadue was having some problems with it, and his lap times were 2 secs faster than Nadue's...he's still got it.

I have always rooted for terry over the other hendrick cars, except when nadeau drove. In charotte when gordon overselpt a few years ago, didnt he drive jeffs car in practice? I do believe terry isnt a full fledged r & d team.

I think Terry is in a pickle. If he had been this open about contract negotiations, he might have ended up in the 38, 21, whatever number the 3rd ganassi car is or possibly in the 1. I think Terry can deffinatly get the job done, didnt he get a top 5 at martinsvill this spring? If terry wanted a new ride, im sure he coudl deffinatly find one.

More I think about it,did not everyone write Awesome Bill off a couple of years ago?I would like to see Terry go run with Ray,Send Jeramy, and the gas smelling bimbo down the road. :D

if terry had a problem with rick not giving him what he needs he has had the opurtunity to leave before and he has it now. I don't know about now but in previous years several high profile teams would have picked him up.

Maybe the 5 needs some new blood in the crew chief job. Frank Stoddard is still looking for work. Memo to Rick Hendrick: Call Frank Stoddard!!!

wouldnt that be a great team? Elliot and Labonte...................but would Ray put 2 old guys in 2 of his cars?...i think he has the set up he wants right now...1 old guy, 1 middle age punk who cant race worth a ****, and 1 young driver full of a lot of potential.

Hell DEI 2 good years in Nascar is slowly becoming the norm.I think Ray would shuck Gomer in a heartbeat. And I for one would love to see the Geritol Express.Maybe that new pill that Bayer/Glasco is going to promote to compete with Viagra would make a great sponser for them.:)
