Yes we also put Dakota down, he was a quarter horse and a great horse. He was almost 33.

We've rescued 5 horses over the years. They're saved from going to the killers and they live out their remaining years in comfort.

We're down to just Big Red now, he may be our last. Maybe not.

Time is the biggest expense. You're committed to at least twice a day feedings every day of the year. Plus clean up. Need a place where they can stretch their legs. Vet and farrier bills are reasonable when compared to feed costs.
I've spent many,many hours sitting under the tree or in my truck just watching them. Good for the heart and mind.

How difficult is it to own a horse?

more than you can imagine, feed cost and vet bills alone can break you, we finally sold our last horse about 4 years ago. We took a loss on the farm for 4 years in a row before we gave it up.

Sorry for your loss. My in-laws just put down their 16 year old dog last weekend, its a tough thing to do.
