D.C. cops: At least 2 shot at Holocaust museum

WASHINGTON - Authorities say at least two people have been shot at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington.

D.C. police spokeswoman Traci Hughes says a person walked into the museum with a gun and shot a guard. Hughes says the shooter was also shot. Authorities have not identified the man.

Hughes says the victims' conditions were not known. Both were being rushed to a hospital.

BREAKING NEWS Police: 2 Wounded in Shootout at U.S. Holocaust Museum

WASHINGTON - At least two people are wounded in a shootout at the U.S. Holocaust Museum in Southwest Washington Wednesday afternoon, D.C. police and U.S. Park Police said.

According to U.S. Park Police spokesman Sergeant David Schlosser, a gunman with a "long gun" walked into the Holocaust Museum and exchanged fire with a security guard. Two other guards also began shooting at the gunman. The gunman and one guard were wounded, Schlosser said. Both were taken to George Washington University Hospital.

Both were rushed to the hospital.
 
One victim and suspect are in critical condition (according to WJLA-NC8)

CNN identified the gunman as James Von Brunn, an 88-year-old man living on Maryland's Eastern Shore. CNN said Von Brunn had ties to hate groups and anti-government activity.

I'd like to know how an 88 year old with a rifle can just walk in the place and not be challenged.

He shot the security guards at the entrance to the museum, ran in and started shooting indiscriminately, before one of the security guards got in a good shot at him.

WRC just reported one of the security guards that was shot is dead. :(
 
I support the right to arm bears.

But seriously, Chicago has some of the strictest gun laws in the nation, and also one of the highest murder rates. That's why I believe in open carry. I doubt this old fart would have tried this if he knew everyone and their grandma was packing heat.

Yes, that was the point I was trying to make.

All these DC cops and security and federal law enforcement in this area and this guy just walks in with a rifle in the summertime with not way to conceal it.

This is a breaking story -- they're still working on all the details.... but, local news just had an eyewitness on who said he was wearing a trench coat (probably had the gun concealed under that).
 
The world will certainly be better for his departure from it, but it sucks that he took out a guard with him.
