Man, was this a hard one for me. I thought long and hard on what I would give up for those 40 days of Lent. Of course there are the usual things that i've given up before, things like liquor, chips, cookies etc., but I wanted to give up something different this year...something that really meant sacrifice. Some of the things I thought of giving up were ranting about Andy, praising NASCAR, ragging on Andy, agreeing with the Whizz and SST in the podium, ragging on Andy, watching the Cup series, ragging on Andy, you get the picture. Anyway, I finally found something that is really going to hurt and that is I'm giving up watching the WNBA for the entire period of Lent. AND to make it even harder, I won't watch any women's college basketball either. You know, if I watched that, I might really be tempted to watch the WNBA and I don't need any temptation like that. So with that in mind, now I'll have more time to rag on Andy. :)

Andy...love ya man!

Nothing. Im not Catholic, Im a baptist, we dont practice lent.;)

I'm Episcopal. We 'celebrate' Lent. I gave up soda this year. A very hard thing for me to do, I'm addicted to Pepsi in the worst way!

He has made it to hard to write over there and took away the forums..

As far as the forums ... We're converting over to a new system before the Rockingham race. What we have now doesn't work since there's no way for me to upload MP3 files or liveblog the race. He's going to be out of town during the Carolina 200 so I've got to be able to do that since I blitz the racetracks and get dozens of interviews at the races.

A buddy of mine got married during Lent. On their honeymoon he started fixing up the couch to sleep on. His new bride asked what he was doing? Wasn't he coming to bed? He said he couldn't that it was lent. She said to who and for how long...

Hmmmm, bet she was a blonde too. :D

I was born and raised Catholic up until I rebelled in 9th grade. I decided that all that the Catholic church was teaching pretty much made no sense to me, so I don't do the church thing anymore, been a few times in the last 35 years, very few, so I'm not giving up anything, I don't believe in it. I feel it is a foolish "tradition" that has long been in need of being dropped by the "church". The entire God thing I find very hard to fathom, give me concrete proof that there is this "Almighty Being" , then I would say ok. Until then I'll believe in the after life the way I see it.;)

I was brought up Catholic also but my biggest problem in believing anything for some years now is why are there so many "men of the cloth" molesting little boys.If there is a Almighty Being he would not be having so many of his teachers doing that.It is so wrong in so many ways.

This should get a little flack:

My question is; why do so many parishioners permit it to happen?

My youngest brother was almost 8 months old when he came home from the hospital. Back then, 1960, health insurance was rare. The Priest came to our house to ask my father when he was going to catch up on his donations and why I had left to go to public school.. My dad explained that he was trying to keep a roof over our heads and that the donation to buy the Priest a new Buick wasn't a priority and as much as he valued my getting a good education he couldn't afford the tution. Striiike 1

My dad sold the house to pay the medical bills, we moved to another town. That priest came to call and explained to my dad that just because we had moved his obligation to the Church remained. When could he expect to see a check,,,,Striiike 2

After being married in the Church and then divorced I learned that if I remarried again outside the Church my soul would burn in Hell for eternity. However, a $2,500 donation (in 1975) would insure a E ticket straight to the Pearly Gates and a tour by St. Peter himself. Striiiike 3

IMHO and I readily admit being biased the Catholic Church is all about the money. YMMV and if so that's good for you.

Thankfully I was never a Alter Boy!!:beerbang: We had big problems here with priests, they've finally settled multi million dollar law suits, the church knew but did nothing. They deserved to lose.

Wow, looks like this thread has been successfully highjacked about Catholic priests. I've had a little experience with the Catholic church, my first was was Catholic and we were married in the church, but I grew up an Episcopalian and I don't regret it at all. As a kid, I was an acolyte or alter boy, and learned a lot. My priest was pretty strict and I could never ever sit back on my heels when kneeling. :) And incinse, if you've never had a priest swinging the incinse holder up to your face, you're really missing something. Priests of the Epicopal church are free to marry and so many of the problems that the Catholics have with child abuse is pretty rare but I'm sure there are some cases. Oh, and I also worked as an "alter boy" when I was in my 40's in the small church I attended when I lived in Iowa. Also, now and then a female priest would fill in for our regular rector. Now as many of your know, I'm a pretty conservative guy and that was hard for me to handle. But when the church changed from the old Book of Common Prayer, it changed my thoughts towards the church. Though today I still consider myself an Episcopalian, I don't attend that church and am a member of the Methodist Church. Oh Lord, talk about highhacking a thread and this one was started by me! :)

BTW, I sure miss the WNBA. Who's in front these days?

I have attended a United Methodist Church all my life. We have visited other churches, but always ended up back home. When I look out and see all of the beautiful things, I know that God exist in my life, man is to selfish to create and share all this beauty. We've had to many miracles in our family not to believe.

After much thought I have decided to give up being a cyberstalker.

Great for you. I first gave up the smokes in 84, then started back up when I was getting a divorce in 95. Gave them up again for good when I crossed the NC state line in November of that year. Since then, only a cigar from my brother-in-law during Christmas will I smoke.

I gave 'em up 2 and a half years ago. If I hadn't I would be on oxygen full time now. I sure am glad a friend who runs a tobacco store said they are going up $6 a carton the first of April here in Tn.

I've given up adopting abandoned animals. My wife hasn't though and I foresee another addition within a week.

Thanks for the inspiration, perhaps I'll give up abandoning adopted animals...
