what a crock!!!

i'm sorry, but thats a crock of chit that brett bodine who is a fulltime driver in winston cup doesn't make it, yet a first timer gets a provisional from a team that hasn't run since the beginning of the year.....NASCAR really needs to look at that....

PS..i'm not a bodine fan either..just think its wrong

I think its fair, Brett Bodine has run all the races and has proved he is not deserving. He had to make it on speed, he knew that. Maybe now Hooters will wake up. Sorry I'm not a big Bodine fan.

Bodine is OUT of provisionals and if not for the current system he could hardly be called a full time driver at all. Same with any number of other cars except because they've been able to finish well they don't get charged.

This is only the 3rd provisional the 66 has used this year compared to 10 by the 23 car and 9 by the 21.

There are any number of cars in the field that would not be full time if it weren't for the idiotic provisonal rules and seeing as how Hideo posted 42nd quick just ahead of Bodine, it would be Tim, Terry, and Morgan going home instead.

I complain about the prov rules lots. I think they suck. But it's real hard to fault the system in one instance and not in all the others. You have no idea how many times I've seen the 71 go home because of them.

Jeff Gordon has NEVER used a provisional:p So getting rid of or changing the use of them is welcomed by me:D Although I see the need for them, but there is abuse.

I don't think it's a crock. The rule is there in an effort to be fair....not unfair. Suppose Mark Martin or Rusty Wallace who have truly fast cars were to have a wheel weight come off and pick up a severe vibration and have to abort their qualifying run or wreck. Would it be fair that they didn't make the race? The provisional rules were put in for things like that......you have provisionals you can use them if necessary to get into the race if you have problems with your one and only shot at qualifying. Apparently, Travis Carter has a provisional and Bretts team did not........or maybe Brett's team did but their run was slower than Fukajama (still haven't learned that spelling!!). I wasn't paying that close enough attention so I don't know who's run was faster. What would you rather happen? NASCAR to change that rule too.......one of few they don't seem to mess with too much......just because Brett's a veteran and Hidio is a first timer? Not many first timers would be allowed to race if that were the rule.

Jeff is gonna need a provisional pretty soon if he doesn't get his qualifying back in order. I haven't seen him qualify this bad in a year ever. Dunno what's up with that.

You wouldn't reckon a little stiffer competition has anything to do with it, would you?:)

Didn't Brett just sign a new associate sponsor? This isn't going to look good. Maybe he needs to get a crew chief, I read where big brother Geoffry is the crew chief this week. Note to Geoffry Bodine, please consider career change, crew chief is not a good idea.

The occaisional blown motor, hit the wall, flat tire thing is not the issue. The issue is that there are lots of good drivers out there in fast cars that can't get in the race or secure decent sponsorship because way too many cars get the free pass.

With or without provisionals, Back Row Joe would have made the race. He out ran Bodine on time anyways. If ya want to be angry at somebody, be angry at the Tim Sauter and Terry Labonte, both of which were slower.

Singling out Back Row Joe as the bad guy in this instance seems kind of off the wall to me

It may be true that the 66 has only used 3 provisionals this year...but that's out of 4 qualifying attempts. Not a very good ratio, if you ask me. And yes, the provisional rules stink. Not only are there WAY too many, but the past champion's prov. is about the lamest thing ever concieved. I do realize there needs to be a few, but 7?! That's overkill. At least 2 provisionals should be dropped, and preferably 3 or 4.

What irks me the most is that the top 25 teams don't get charged.

And that's 7 provs to start with, ya get more depending on how many races you attempt to qualify for.

You're wrong about the starting number, 71fan. Here's how it works: You start out the season with 4, and then get an additional one after (the car's) 8th, 16th, 24th, and 32nd qualifying attempt. Note that it's attempts, not races run. Anyone outside the top 25 in owner's points at the time they use a provisional gets charged one.

I would say Brett's best choice is to hang up the helmet & do what Richard Childress did back in 1981.
Hire a driver!
I think that's the only way his team will survive.

well dern, wrong again.....thanks for catching that....and yea, I knew it was attempts....just thought they started with 7 instead of 4

They should be charged no matter where they are in points AND figure out a way to charge the "real" owner for the use of one.

Second part probably not possible, but Roush has like 4 cars and just one or two are "really" his. He is not the only one, just an example.

Same with testing. Some loopholes need to be addressed.

I am glad i am back online!! I am also glad to see this issue has been talked about in a descent manner. i was not going to start it off so nice, and after reading, i am glad i did not make myself look like an idiot. i do feel though, however, that a new guy should not have the precedence over a guy running the full schedule. regardless of his performance. oh well, thanks for all the great info. im going back to the track in a couple a hours. good night;)

But if it weren't for the provs, more than a few teams would not be full time.

a "Catch 22"? It's rules.....there has to be something. And near impossible to make rules that satisfy every problem. Hideo made the race.........now lets see how he performs!! :)

Geesh, who cares HOW he performs? Not me. That the dude was able to come to one of the toughest tracks nascar has to offer and get around the track at speed without banging the wall ain't none too shabby.

He's keeping a promise and going up against the best stock car drivers in the world on their turf. He out ran Brett and former champ Terry, not to mention Tim and Morgan.

Give the man credit where credit where credit is due. If he even gets close to the end of the race less than 10 or 20 laps down he'll have done more than in a day than thousands of guys just dream about.

Car owner Carl Haas hasn't got the big bucks. The car itself at best is a 30th place car. If he brings it home in one piece he'll have done good.

This is very true. You got to hand it to him. He did his best and made the race. I hope he does well on Sunday.

He desperately needs a spotter that speaks Japanese and English, I cant believe that no one from the 66 made that happen. I hope he does well and runs a safe, clean race!
5 time road racing Champ....can wait to see him at Sonoma or Watkins Glen!!
