Here kitty, kitty, kitty
This evening, the door bell rang and when I answered it, I saw a neighbor, small woman who is Persian along with another neighbor. Pari, who is in her early 50's seemed to be close to tears and I asked her what was wrong. She asked if I could help her to get her husband to the bathroom. Pari's husband is 80 and was recently diagnosed with brain cancer. (BTW, he has the same doctor at Duke University that Senator Kennedy has). I said sure and off we went to her home. Inside, I saw her husband lying on the floor in front of the bathroom. I helped him up and we worked him into the bathroom where he did his business. I went back into the living room and waited. Pari told me that her son who had been home helping her, had just left for Miami for a job interview. She then asked if I would help her get her husband into the car so he could go where she had to be. Of course I would and waited for him to get dressed and ready to go. He can't speak English but she asked him to say "hi" to me and he did. We started out the door with her holding him up and I suggested that it would be better if I held him when we went down the front stairs. Just after I got my arms around him, he slumped down in my arms, losing consciousness. Pari grabbed his legs and we carried him back into the house and onto the couch, still in my arms. Pari looked at me and ask what should we do. I told her to call 911 and get an ambulance now. She got through, but with her hard accent and emotions running wild, she finally handed the phone to me and I told the operator all I could and that we needed the ambulance like yesterday. Within 4 minutes, the emt's were her and took over. They put him on the floor and found just a faint pulse, but the head EMT started cpr. Finally the ambulance arrived and they were ready to take over. There was nothing more that I could do so I went to Pari, put my hands on both sides of her face and looked her in the eyes and told her that he was now in good hands. I hated to leave at that time, but I could see that her husband was pretty well spent.
When I got back into the house, the wife asked what it was. After i told her, she said that I should have told her and she could have helped, but I couldn't move from where I was once the man passed out. But she ended up going over to the neighbor to see if she could help and I think that she was able to at least talk to Pari and tell her what to expect. The wife told me that she was pretty sure that he had expired but that they wanted to run him to the hospital as per Pari's request. Some other neighbors took her to the hospital following the anbulance.
This was the first time I've actually experienced seeing someone die in my presence, and more than that, in my arms. Though they have been our neighbors for over eight years, we barely know them except to say hi when we see each other. They have two children, a boy and a girl. Pari lost her job as a bank teller because she had to take care of her husband.
I'd ask you to pray for Pari and her children, and of course her husband in the slight chance that they can save him.
As for me...I'm just kind of numb from this experience. Again, I've never had anything like this happen around me.
