What needs to be done to stop the gun violence in this country? Can anyone give a valid reason for assault type weapons in the hands of individual civilians?

One guy tries to light his shoes on fire and now most everyone who flies has to take off their shoes.
31 school, mall, workplace shootings since Columbine in 1999 and what's been done? Nothing.

Nothing can be done. Tighter gun laws aren't gonna make the over 300 million guns in circulation just disappear. This is a problem with no solution.

Good point. The thing is, what these people are doing is illegal, why would they care if the guns they are using are also illegal?

I have all the sadness and sympathy in the world about what happened in Connecticut. I simply can not fathom what would make somebody kill dozens of innocent children. I'm not going to get into any kind of a long gun control argument, as it simply doesn't seem like the time.

The only thing that seems to be possible is people being much more vigilant in recognizing the signs of the type of mental illness that would enable someone to do this kind of thing. Unfortunately, noone wants to believe a relative, or even a friend, is actually capable of something like that, even if all the signs are there.

The focus should be keeping the guns out of the hands of mentally unstable individuals, however I don't believe that this can be accomplished.
