I saw on RPMTonight that he was fined $2000 for a pit road violation, but didn't say what it was. Just curious if anybody knows.

One of his crewmen went over the wall without a helmet on. In nascar's eyes, the crew chief is responsible for all of the crewmen's actions, therefore he got fined.

Dumb I think. Fine the guy who went over. Wouldn't that make the most sense?

But who gets fined when a gas overflow catcher gets stuck, winshield wipe thingie falls off, a tire gets away, an engine guy sucker punches the driver, etc., etc., etc.

That's just NASCAR

This is the last paragraph of the article from That's Racing's website regarding the fine:

"Mike Ford, crew chief for Bill Elliott's No. 9 Winston Cup Dodge, was fined $2,000 because team member Phil Gould went onto pit road during the UAW-GM 500 without having a helmet on."

Those incidents are more the team being penalized during the race. OK so maybe if a guy goes over the wall without a helmet maybe the team should be penalized? :p

You have to remember that $2000 for a crew chief is much more affordable then a pit crew member getting fined $2000.

Does anyone else remember when Bill Elliott had a crew member killed on pit road? That was one of the first incidents that led to all of the safety rules, pit road speed limits, stringent regulations about # of crew members over the wall, etc. that we have today.

I remember that. That was one of the few races he was running well in that during his 7 year drought.

Sounds like an appropriate fine to me.
