Mark Martin wins while leading a lap but not the most laps and finishes the season with 6449 points.

Dale Earnhardt Jr finishes 2nd while leading a lap but not the most laps or finsihes 3rd while leading the most laps and finishes the season with 6449 points.

Jeff Gordon finishes 13th without leading a lap and finishes the season with 6449 points.

Jimmie Johnson finishes 14th without leading a lap and finishes the season with 6449 points.

Kurt Busch finishes 20th without leading a laps and finishes the season with 6449 points.

And the 5 way ties is broken by most wins with Jimmie Johnson getting the trophy.

This one of at least 21 scenarios that have the championship ending in a 5 way tie.

But who's second? Jeff and Jr both have 6 wins!! :)

The official standings show Jeff Gordon with 5 wins and Dale Earnhardt Jr with 6.

The tie breaker is most wins. If they have the same amount of wins, it then becomes the most 2nd place finishes. If they have the same amount of 2nd place finishes, it is then the most 3rd place finishes. And so forth and so on until the tie is broken.

There is no scenario where Jeff and Dale Jr could wind up the season tied in points and wins since Jeff is in front of Junior in the standings curently.

Maybe a moustache growing contest...OR whoever had the sweetest mullet in the early nineties...I've seen some sweet Jeff Gordon mullet action...with the stache to boot! Anyone got pics of either Jeff Gordon or Dale Jr with a mullet?

If Jeff and Junior tie I'm sure they would figure out a way to give it to Junior. Gotta make the masses happy.

"If Jeff and Junior tie I'm sure they would figure out a way to give it to Junior. Gotta make the masses happy."

And Nascar looked the other way for ALL of Gordon's championships when he soaked his tires. He was Nascar's golden boy and they had to keep the masses happy.

It works both ways.

What I'm hoping for on Sunday:

1. Kurt Busch wins the points championship by a single point. Mike Helton, in a post-race interview, makes a telltale slip of the tongue when he says, "And we thought last year's champion would be the most ignored in NASCAR's history...whew boy. Y'all ain't seen ignoring yet!"

2. NASCAR also announces that they have removed their collective heads from their oversized asses and will not only continue the annual running of the Southern 500, but plan to restore it to its rightful place on the schedule...Labor Day weekend.

3. Richard Childress announces his retirement, and offers a heartfelt apology to all racing fans for being the blight he has been for the last quarter century.

4. Cameras catch a gigantic garbage truck dumping every known restrictor plate in existence into the Atlantic Ocean.

Hey, a fellah can dream, right?

GO KURT! MAKE 'EM ALL SQUIRM!!!!

I know it's bs. The same bs that Nascar would find a way of placing Jr in front of Gordon.

I'd like to see a ten lap shootout between those that are tied. That would be fun.

If you think a green/white/checkered for a race win is dicey, just imagine putting 5 cars are the track with a limited number of laps and the winner takes the championship! That would certainly be a matter of last man standing wins.

Since there still seems to be some confusion about the tie-breaker system NASCAR uses...

If 2 or more drivers are tied in points, the position goes to the driver with the most wins. If they have the same number of wins, then it goes by most second place finishes. If they have the same number of second place finishes, then it goes by third place finishes. And it keeps going in that manner until there is a winner.

If the case of Jeff Gordon and Dale Earnhardt Jr ending this season in a tie, Dael Earnhardt Jr wins the tie on the basis of more wins (6 vs 5.) If Jeff wins the race (giving him 6 wins) then he'll end the season with more points than Dale Jr.

I think a 10 round, bareknuckle fight to the death would be good.
