I understand NASCAR is thinking about changing the points rules claiming somthing to the affect that someone with a huge points lead late in the season is causing viewership to fall off. It's funny how that did'nt seem to bother them when Dale Sr. and Jeff Gordon were winning by large margins but I digress. How can they have a fair playoff system when, even though 43 cars will still be starting, only the top 10 after 26 races will be eligible for the championship? Would'nt it stink if one of the top 10 cars was accidentally taken out in an accident caused by the car ranked 30TH in points, or, even worse, a rookie making his first or second start to get a jump on the 2005 season? NO other major sport allows those not making the "playoffs" to continue to compete. The only way I would go for somthing like this is if the only cars on the track were the top 10 qualifiers. Why don't they just change the Winston (or whatever Nextell will call it) to allow all the cars that run in the open segment to continue on, but only count those who actually qualified to be eligible for the win?
Of course all 43 cars will be allowed to finish the season due to sponsor demands.
If NASCAR wants to avoid the late season viewership fall off I suggest they end the season sooner. They probably don't want to admit it, but competing head to head with the NFL in September, October, and November HAS to be costing some viewership. Plus as much as I love racing, a 10 month long season is a little to long.
