I have to say that it bugs me when people insult other people's musical preferences. I've fallen into that habit before myself at times. However, I don't see where other people's preferences harm me.

I don't have much use for pop music or most rap music that has come out in the last 20 years or so, but I don't begrudge those who do enjoy it. If you like it, have fun. Justin Bieber doesn't do a thing for me, but there are millions of people out there who get a lot of enjoyment, and a deeper appreciation for music as a whole, out of his music.

I don't get some of my son's music, the stuff where guys scream all the time, but he does, and it inspires him to want to play guitar. I've tried to teach him over the years many times, but the desire was never really there until he started getting into bands like Underoath, Haste The Day, and Bullet For My Valentine (his current favorite). Bullet For My Valentine doesn't appeal to me, but I see him practicing and learning their music all the time. And he is getting really good at playing guitar because of it. I was pretty obsessed with the metal bands of the 80's when I was his age and when I started playing guitar myself. My tastes evolved over the years as did my guitar playing. I became a huge Stevie Ray Vaughan fan and, as a result, a big blues fan. I've never really liked Eric Clapton at all, but he has certainly inspired a ton of guitarists over the years, including my favorite living guitar player, Joe Bonamassa. Most of my favorite music revolves around great guitar playing, but certainly not all of it.

I like an awful lot of country music, although as a musician, it doesn't do much for me. I tend to like more of the little bit older country music, but some of the new stuff is really good too. Taylor Swift is an incredibly gifted song-writer and her music just sounds good too. I like Brad Paisley and several other current stars as well. There is something about Rascal Flatts that really bugs me and I don't get the fascination with Lady Antibellum (sp?) at all, but there are an awful lot of people who really enjoy it and I can't, for the life of me, figure out how that hurts me one bit.

Sorry for the rambling, but I could talk about music all day.

I could talk music all day also. I'd rather listen to music then anything else. I used to like Country music years ago. Growing up with it and going to racetracks I guess I had to. Now, I can't stand it. Drives me up a wall. Since about 1994 I'm all about hard rock and I think the new stuff beats the old hands down. I also like 50's and 60's oldies. People laugh but I can go from Buddy Holly to Marilyn Manson and not miss a beat.

Some people feel the need to tell others what music is ok to listen to and what isn't. I never understood that myself but that's just me. I listen to a lot of music that other people might not like but I don't care because I don't listen to it for them.

Well as you know, if it's not played on the radio, it sucks.:p

I know where this thread came from, and good one it is. I tend to bash someone else's musical taste if they bash mine, I'm just immature like that.

But, I really think if the music you listen to is something you enjoy, then there ain't nothing wrong with it. I am a long time classic rocker and metalhead, and if you would have told me ten years ago that I would be diggin' on traditional bluegrass (which I really, really do), I'd have said you were nuts. At the same time, I still can't stand country music, but plenty of people do, I hear it all the time. I don't generally like rap, but there's quite a bit of talent to be heard in the genre.

I have over 11,000 songs on my iPod, and it's in my ear all day at work. Just today, I've heard complete albums by everyone from Van Halen to Bill Monroe to an obscure heavy metal band from Biloxi (that I don't even think is around anymore) named Level With the Ground. Even Jimmy Smith and Theloneous Monk get played, as well as Howling Wolf and even Cannibal Corpse.

Just please don't tell me that radio play and album sales make a good band. They don't.

I like every style of music (heavy metal less than the rest) but I can't pinpoint a sole reason why I don't like the songs I don't like. I guess I would say that some types of music give me a headache and I choose not to listen to it.

This from a man who has, numerous times, posted a link to a video and proclaimed "worst song ever."

The "song", "rumor has it" has officially made me lose faith in mankind and our ability to produce music, or any other useful product.

Always liked country. Lady A is far better live then on the radio I have to say. I tend to like rock of most kinds, but not the screaming stuff. I don't know what it is about rap and hip hop but I've never liked it and can't stand it.

About heavy metal, I am a self proclaimed metalhead. I can't say I like the screamers either, but, depending on the music, the gutteral cookie monster style can do me fine. Depending of course.

But then I guess it all depends on your definition of screaming.:headbang:

It's a matter of taste. I like some metal, but the screamo metal sets my teeth on edge.

I like some Adele songs but people annoy me sometimes with her. It's like every song she puts out people on the radio act like it's the greatest thing ever.

In my opinion, it's obvious that she is the best non-country vocalist. Although Norah Jones is up there.

It would also depend on what you label as "metal." What some people call metal is neither heavy nor metal.

That can be said for every genre. Lady Antebellum is not country music, not even close, but they consistently win major country music awards.

The absolutely maddenning BOOM BOOM BOOM beat, nobody plays an instrument, its all computer crap, songs no longer have a melody and that God-Awful voice synthesizer. We need music people in the music industry not accountants and image consultants. Wheres Ahmet Ertegun when we need him the most.

Actually, do you have an example? There is some stuff that is computer based, but put together by someone, and in some cases (not all) there's some talent in there.

I agree 100% but it's not just music. Look at movies like Twilight, not a lick of talent in the entire cast but they are "pretty" and they make more than most movies the entire year. It's just part of living in todays world.

Screaming? So I'm right now watching The Who in their video about making Their biggest album, "Who's Next". So in what is probably their biggest hit, "Who Are You", Daltry begins his singing with what would really be described as a scream. BUT, while that really is a scream, it's not what I assume those of you have been calling screaming in a song. Does ACDC scream? How about you name a group from the 60's and 70's. I'm like BO in that I wonder why people criticize music they don't like. There was a time when hard rockers so hated disco music that they would do everything they could to try and ban the music. Anyone remember the burning of disco records in stadiums? If one really wants to see what type of music is most popular all one has to do is check out what kind of music is played on the radio. There was a time when "oldies" was a big thing but these days, those stations have changed formats for the most part. Hip hop and country and the majority formats of today, but in time, those too will change.

ACDC is awesome. I loved Highway to Hell, Back in Black, You Shook me all night long....

Yeah, I know what you mean. I started a thread about a band that I went to see that put on a poor performance and because someone else didn't agree with my preference and my opinion regarding the band, my thread turned ugly real quick.

Fixt it for you.;)

<edit> Damm, I just realized I've turned into my Father!

Kristen Stewart has always been a terrible actress. She was in the otherwise solid film adaption of Laurie Halse Anderson's "Speak" and was completely expressionless the entire movie, even during the scenes she needed expression.

She wasn't too bad in Panic Room, although her part wasn't very complex. She was fighting a diabetic coma most of the time. She was only like 12 years old at the time, but it was the best acting job of her career. I'm not sure what that says about her, but I'm pretty sure it's not good. She is pretty hot looking, but her personality takes most of the heat out of her for me.

Gotta disagree with that one. Even my 22 year old son doesn't like her, and darn sure wouldn't include her in any hot lists.

What personality? :XXROFL:

I was listening to Crosby Stills Nash and Youngs Deja Vu album (vinyl not CD) the other day and got to thinking, would these guys even have a chance today in getting on the radio???????

I loved the group when they were just a trio...sans Young. I just have never cared for Neal. Hard to compare groups from another age to what is being played today.

See, I love Neil Young. Well, more with Crazy Horse than solo, but still. My wife really dislike's him, and I can see why people don't, especially his solo stuff with his voice.

I heard an interview with him on NPR years ago and learned about his health problems with his brain. He's really lucky to be alive.

I listen to just about everything except rap. I however wouldn't tell someone listening to Rap and enjoying it that it is bad stuff and sucks.

Slipknot, Godsmack, Disturbed, Marilyn Manson, Seether, Five Finger Death Punch, Volbeat, Three Days Grace, Metallica, Korn......... That's the stuff I like.

Wow, all I can say is did you see Jimmy Johnson's ad? Kinda the same way I feel. Sorry but those groups are way outta my range. Give me some good old 60's and 70's rock. BTW, if you haven't seen the movie "Woodstock", check it out and see what my generation dug. :djspin:
