It must have been a deal too good to turn down according to two people over the weekend. I can't remember the first person I heard say this, but DW said the same thing on Wind Tunnel tonight. Both said Tony Stewart did not pay one penny to get 50% of the Haas team. The question remains who brokered the deal and put up the $$$ to get him with that team? Chevy? Hendrick? Mystery person(s)?

Well maybe he had to pay so much to get out of his Gibbs contract that they decided to just front him the money to start it up..lmao.. But really im sure there is some deal he made on the side.. its not just about using his name to get big sponsors.

not to beat a dead horse here but arent one of the HAAS owners in prision right now for tax fraud or something?

I'm thinking GM had a hand in this. They wanted Tony back in the bowtie brigade something fierce.

I doubt Chevy had anything to do with it, if you have noticed lately GM stock has plummetted. I wouldn't be surprised if Chevy pulls a lot of their sponsorship out of Nascar as a cost cutting measure. I could be wrong , but i just don't see Chevy shelling out money right now just to lure a driver back to the bowtie.

That's what I heard on Inside Nascar, but that's all I heard, so don't know anything poignant. Duane

Tony said in an ESPN interview that Chevy contacted him in December about coming back to Chevy.

Chevrolet probably had to pay Joe Gibbs Racing for the "get out of jail free" card for Tony. However, if he was "given" a 50% stake in Haas CNC Racing and "control" of the operations, his salary may be $0 for 2009. He may have to earn his "take" with race winnings and sponsorships. If so, chances are he will be successful on the business side of this venture, even if he doesn't get into the winner's circle. The Stewart Haas Racing venture will grow in value as time goes by.

Troubled General Motors has notified two racetracks that run NASCAR events that their current contracts will not be renewed as part of an overall $10 billion cost-cutting program.

That seems to be just the first step in what could be a huge drop in support by GM, Ford and Chrysler for tracks and teams in NASCAR's top three professional divisions, the NHRA and other racing series in the face of the weakest U.S. auto sales in a decade

And motorsports sponsorships will not be exempt from the cutbacks.

"Like all areas of the business, these areas have not gone without a certain level of scrutiny, and there will be modifications and changes in our promotional footprint in all of those areas," Troy Clarke, president of GM North America, said Tuesday. "We're not going to talk about the details today, and specifically NASCAR, but all those areas have been reviewed and will continue to be as we work these action plans through."

I wonder if GM atarts to cut funding, will more teams go to Toyota, if the checkbook is still open?
