Mother Turns Herself In After Being Charged With Murder
May 21st, 2004
A local mother is in jail after turning herself in on murder charges following the death of her daughter. Prosecutors say the mom neglected her daughter's diabetes, which eventually took the life of 11-year-old Ariel Botzet. News 3's Kori Chambers reports the mother will likely be spending the weekend in jail. Monday is the very earliest that Cheryl Botzet could possibly appear in court and get bail. Until then, she'll be in custody. News 3 cameras caught Cheryl turning herself in.
"The kid has had diabetes since the age of two. She died at the age of 11." There is no question about just how terrible diabetes can be. "You can be watching your kid 24 hours a day, and turn around and your kid can be passed out and die. It's that sort of a terrible disease."
But prosecutors think a terrible mom could also be to blame after the death of her 11 year old daughter. Cheryl Botzet is now facing murder charges months after Ariel Botzet died in a diabetic coma. "She always remembered when she has to take her medication and the teacher would reminded her." One of Ariel's friends says that the fifth grader seemed to stay on top of her disease, but prosecutors say that her mother didn't.
They believe the fifth grader's death came after months without proper insulin and medical treatment. Now it is mom's life that hangs in the balance. "It said premeditated and deliberate, as if like she sat down and said, 'Now how am I going to kill my daughter? I think I'm going to give her diabetes.' Does that sound plausible?"
Herb Sachs, the mother's attorney, says as of today, no deal is in the works because he doesn't think the prosecution really has a case. Child Protective Services had investigated Cheryl Botzet at least twice, but they found neglect allegations to be unfounded.
