What makes a driver "Good"

The thread about the greatest driver of all time just got me thinking about what makes a driver the "Greatest".

Is it wins - easily settled, is it how many different types of race cars you've raced - also easily settled. Maybe the number of years raced.

I do know two things, 1. Potential DOES NOT make you a good driver and 2. my mother's been driving for 40 years and she can't drive a lick. (not race cars) :)

Wins, years you have been racing, being able to stick out the hard parts, drive more then one type of race car, attitude, fan friedly, and know when its time to hang it up.

winning for different car owners, different crew chiefs and in different car makes and also running well in underfunded race teams.

talent, concentration, natural ability, good observation skills, co-ordination, dedication, a great teacher/mentor, practice, practice, practice, and $$$$$$$

All of the best points have alreay been made,so I would just add a driver's cunning and strategy, along with the pit-crew's performance and track position is parmount at a lot of tracks nowadays IMHO.
There are different traits though that have made the myriad of great drivers "great" over the years, some are more clever, some are basically hard chargers while other drivers are mor eof teh finesse types and a few special drivers have several of these traits that make Them stand out above many other drivers, again IMHO. ;)

If they are my favorite, it automatically means they are good. Even if the last time they won a race was when I was 6.

Ability to get the absolute best out of a given situation.

The ability to become "one" with the machine. To be able to "feel" the car and know how to handle it. To take an ill handling car and drive the wheels off of it. You'll recognize a great driver when you hear other drivers praising his abilities. Most great drivers become champions although, not all of them do, some are called home early and we will never know how great they would have become. Great drivers leave their names in the history of racing.

What makes a driver good?

Maybe the ability to avoid all those slovernly sloths and viscious snails that pop up along life's path to greatness?

Sorry folks; I just couldn't resist it! Blame Kat. She's the one who brought up the subject of sloths and snails. (I have no idea why a Kat would be interested in sloths or snails unless it was a really boring day, but I guess one never knows...)
