I have a question ... I thought in some part of my mind that Jeff Gordon used to name his cars or at least the chassis. They would use names more descriptive then just chassis 001.

Do any teams really do this? I think it would fun to know what some of the names were/are.

Teams did name their cars, but I haven't heard of this for years.

Gordon had a car in the mid 90's called Blacker. That car was a beast. I think it won six times. It was on a permanent rail.
Saw him win the last 500 miler at Dover with it leading 400 of the 500 laps.

Sebastian Vettel (F1) still names his chassis.

STR3 - Julie
RB5 (x2) - Kate, Kate's Dirty Sister
RB6 (x2) - Luscious Liz, Randy Mandy
RB7 - Kinky Kylie
RB8 - Abbey
RB9 - Hungry Heidi
RB10 - Suzie

Haven't heard of it going on much anymore in NASCAR, though.

Now that's someone with a healthy and active mind. :D

You beat me to it FL. I always thought it was cool that he named them. some folks believe that cars have a soul. Sebs cars must have liked their names.
I believe he named the alternators too ----------- POS or something like that :D

I believe Gordon named his 1997 Jurassic Park The Ride all star race car "T-Rex" for Rex Stump, the HMS engineer who designed that beast. That car was banned & then "blacker" won the 600 the same week.

Those are girl's names....wonder if Danica will name hers a guys names?

We found out in 2009 what not to name our car. It was being a little difficult that day and not running to good so we called it a pig because it couldn't seem to get off the line. It spoke back to us on the next pass and told us it didn't like that name.

And it was still a pig off the line. :D

But man that engine sure blew the body to bits!

Pretty nasty. Looks like @2.19 it lost a cylinder...
It did because it broke a rocker and filled that cylinder with fuel and then fired it all at one time and that is why it was such a massive explosion. We run a 107 gpm fuel pump.

I'm sure many teams have had a car that they'd like to take out back and shoot buckshot into 'em. :D

Every now and then you get a lemon.
We found the problem fixed it and that same car with a new body won a race at Brainerd the next year and then ran it's quickest pass ever at Indy. We still have a brand new chassis up in the top of the trailer but we haven't needed to use it yet. We just purchased another new body last week so now we have four. You never know when you might need them.:D

Cool! And true you never know when another motor may blow. Must scare the hell out of a driver.

thanks for sharing

Back in the 90s I think nearly all of Gordon's cars had names, most of which started with the letter B. Blacker, Boomer, Beavis, Butthead, and so on

I know Hendrick teams have had names for their cars. They had one named Emma that Jr drove a replica of in his Hendrick debut.

I remember back in 1991 & 92, RYR had a car that Davey drove dubbed 007. I don't know if that was the chassis number or the cars name but it was a fast car, it won a few races for them before finally getting destroyed in the 1992 The Winston where he crashed hard after beating Kyle Petty for the win at the finish line. When Allison was pulled from the car, he first asked if they won & then was informed that the car had passed & was upset about it, I would've been too...
