the first thing that sticks out to me is the in car camera shots IMO are better back then!!! I don't know if there is simply too much crap in cars to see out the back window but you can see in those shots the view of the cars behind, you can see the suspension actually working in the cars.

the next thing is stop repaving the freaking race tracks!!! for crying out loud look how bumpy the track that these guys raced on was. you would have drivers whining and moaning. I think they just dealt with the race track back in the day. that was all part of it.

I have to think drivers were tuffer back then too. look at Cale with elbows out wheeling that car through the bumps, its awesome.

the other is man ken squirer was good, ned jarrett as a pit reporter these guys deserve so much credit.

Lets see if I remember Auntys lessons...

The suspension is not a factor in this Gen or NASCAR racer. The skirts and splitter slam the car into the track such that shocks dont play much role anymore. Plus I think NASCAR mandates their damping rates.

I agree with the bumpiness. I like it! But, I think you see with the outcry when ATL was gonna get the repave job, that todays drivers like an old surface.

Drivers with no power steering, and bias ply tires. They may have been tougher, but do you really want our superstars sucking on exhaust fumes for the trip down memory lane?

For me, I say get the cars out of the race track and lets make suspension relevant again. Balance this with keeping the cars on the ground.

I gotta disagree with those of you who think pit road speed limits are a bad thing.

that and racing back to the flag stand when a caution is thrown are two of the most incredibly dangerous things I've ever seen at a race track.

How about the cars with no aero skirts. A rront end that you could almost put a lunchbox under....lol
cars are too fast and will flip, need to reduce power then, how about running real stock cars at the plate tracks, top speed would be about 150mph.

Yea, they can flip at a few, but there are alot they won't. Then again, if you picked the car up off the asphalt by 3 or 4 inches there would be no drivers able to drive the cars.......lol

racing is dangerous that's the hook. how safe do want to make it, hell might as well sit on the guard rail and watch the cars go around the Baltimore beltway 3/4 wide bumper to bumper weaving in and out of traffic is more dangerous then some of the single file racing we see now.

Um, you could go to dinner on a Saturday night before the race and one of the drivers might be seated next to you. Then on Sunday after the checkered flag waived, you could cross the track into victory lane and walk around the garage as the drivers and teams prepared to leave. Then their is the element of danger that existed back then too.

I agree. There are too many rules today.
Bravo Sloggie for a great post with very few words....... That's what I have been preaching for years...... Nascar has legislated themselves out of fandom completely..... Everything that made fans want to watch and follow..... There's a rule against it now.....
