NASCAR outraged by 'Dateline' racial story approach: NASCAR said it was "outrageous" that "Dateline NBC" targeted one of its race tracks last weekend for a possible segment on anti-Muslim sentiment in the United States. NASCAR said NBC confirmed it was sending Muslim-looking men to a race, along with a camera crew to film fans' reactions. The NBC crew was "apparently on site in Martinsville, Va., walked around and no one bothered them," NASCAR spokesman Ramsey Poston said Wednesday. "It is outrageous that a news organization of NBC's stature would stoop to the level of going out to create news instead of reporting news," Poston said. "Any legitimate journalist in America should be embarrassed by this stunt. The obvious intent by NBC was to evoke reaction, and we are confident our fans won't take the bait," he said. NASCAR is in the final year of a broadcasting agreement with NBC Sports. "'Dateline' is looking into this story," NBC said in a statement. "We were intrigued by the results of a recent Washington Post/ABC News poll and other articles regarding increasing anti-Muslim sentiments in the United States. "It's very early on in our newsgathering process, but be assured we will be visiting a number of locations across the country and are confident that our reporting team is pursuing this story in a fair manner," it said.(ESPN.com/AP)(4-6-2006)

I hope nobody in this forum is surprised by this incident. I certainly am not. If there is no news of merit...go make some news.
Everyone must do all they can to keep their employment. You and I simply work harder.. We get our necks sunburnt and calluses on our hands.. Good honest work is what we do.
But then there are the guys that need to produce something.. Some chase ambulances ( :) ) Some make new laws (rules) that are needless so more enforcement is needed. Some make up stories for the news.
The real story here is what the southerners (supposed rednecks) did NOT DO. These Muslims were treated zackly as if they were simply more NASCAR fans. If they had been blacks or Chinese or whatever our people would have treated them zackly the same as any other NASCAR fan. The truth about us all is in that post. WE are a great people.
The news folks blow everything BAD waaaay out of proportion. But the GOOD seems to only see small print, if any at all.

'Dateline' defends planting Muslims at NASCAR race
By Nate Ryan, USA TODAY

After bringing Muslim men to Martinsville Speedway in Virginia to gauge the reaction of NASCAR fans, Dateline NBC won't have its cameras at Texas Motor Speedway this weekend.

In a statement released Thursday, NBC defended its reporting tactics, saying "there have been a lot of inaccurate comments" and that Dateline "had barely begun its reporting."

"Dateline is not planning a story about NASCAR," the statement said. "We are following up on a recent poll and other articles indicating an increase in anti-Muslim sentiment in the United States. We are curious about whether that is true. The NASCAR race at Martinsville was a stop we have made in our research on this story.

"There is nothing new about the technique of witnessing the experience of someone who might be discriminated against in a public setting."

NASCAR officials were angry after learning Dateline recruited Muslims to attend the DirecTV 500. NASCAR spokesman Ramsey Poston said the group walked around outside the track without any reaction from fans.

"It's outrageous that a news organization like NBC would seek to create the news instead of reporting the news," Poston said.

NASCAR is in the final year of a contract with NBC Sports, which will broadcast the second half of the Nextel Cup season.

Is this story really that easy to criticize when the world of racing discourse is ridden with people who carry anti-muslim sentiments? I don't know, people such as majestyx and fergy1370?

Simply, you can put lipstick on a pig, but it's still a pig, my friends.

If you don't believe me, you can see for yourself by searching "The Podium."

Isn't this nice. You are either someone who has been around for a while and decided that you didn't want anyone to know who you were when you posted this, or you waited until you found something that you could try to stir up problems. In either case, you opinions don't carry much here. Til you have been around for a while and aren't afraid to show who you really are, go take a dump and leave us alone.

That sounds like a former idiot who used to post here....surprised he didn't post any more porn or spam.

What the idiot is missing is the fact that all those folks with the window stickers did NOTHING in front of the cameras.. I bet this jerk hangs in some strange sites.

As a "minority", the only time I've had someone say a racial slur to me was at Daytona in the summer of '99. I've been to California, Michigan, Bristol, Las Vegas, Kansas, Homestead-Miami, Atlanta, and Daytona. Never gone back to Daytona. At the other tracks, it's been awesome. There are some "bad apples" out there, and they will, unfortunately, be the ones who get the attention. 99.5% of NASCAR fans are not like that. I know it; I just hope I don't have to deal with the likes of the 2 persons that I "met" in Daytona again.

Ryan12 please go back to Daytona.. Don't let 2 rotton apples spoil Daytona for you. By now those 2 are not going to be there anyway.
If you are a fan go where the other fans go!

So what is the big deal ???
NASCAR went on the defensive and took it personally because of a news organization working on building a story.

Would the information have been any less disturbing if the initial effort were to have taken place at an NFL, NBA or MLB game before coming to a NASCAR venue ?????

Seems Brian France got his undies in a wad, along with a buncha other people, and jumped the gun. Of course this is the second time Brian and Company have made suggestions they want history or perceived history, to go away.

The thing here is to wait and see if NBC's DATELINE follows through and attends other venues. After all, fair play and all that stuff would indicate NASCAR was not a target as initial reactions indicate.

It seems people are more offended about being perceived as "racial predjudice" than having others show, through an international news organization, they are not. Looks like in this case scenario, NBC's experiment provoked no reaction and yet, the masses and the chief organizer are offended. Offended by what ?? By what did not take place ????? SHEESH !!!!!!

Jesus Whizzer "offended by what?"
I am offended by the fact that they did not, the very next evening, come out and say they found NASCAR fans to respect all faiths and all people as the same! I am offended that they ONLY want to find the few bad apples that MAY be at our gatherings..
I am offended that they are looking to paint us ALL with the same brush.. And that brush is not filled with the paint of who we really ARE! I am offended that they wish to make a story, and a bad one at that, about good, honest, hard working middle America that would be a complete dishonest story if it does ever see the light of day.

This is not the first time Dateline has tried to make a story, or should I say stage one. Anyone remember the story they did about fuel tanks on Chevy pickups blowing up?

Today's new organizations are hell bent on finding something very negative about anything they can, be it politicians to certain areas of the country. Look at the polls they report on almost daily, and dig deep to see what they don't report about those poles. One should also find out how the questions are asked as well. Many people up north, particularly in the northeast, still perceive NASCAR to be a "redneck" sport and the boobs that watch are hicks and hayseeds.
