Caution Periods and Laps up in 2005: in 2005, there have been 67 more yellow flags /caution periods in the 32 races than in the 2004 season after the same amount. So far in 2005, the drivers have run 85 more caution laps and ran 22 more total laps in 2005 [due to green-white-checker finishes]
(per knowyournascar)

I'll be willing to bet that the number of hours devoted to commercials is increased as well.

I know commercials make them money, but dammit they are getting out of control. I remember just a few years ago, you had a few green flag commercial breaks, and during the caution they would have one. Now, it seems like it's every 2 minutes or less. You know what I hate most, though? I hate it when they come back from break to say a sponsor's name and go right back to commercial again. It is ridiculous. Ah well. I guess I'll just have to get used to it, though.

That's right. As the networks pay NASCAR to put their product on the air they must then turn around and sell time to recoup their pay out. So the more coverage NASCAR gets the more popular it becomes and the more commercials that are shown.

At least ABC/ESPN will run the race side by side with the commercials like they do for Indy Car and Soccer.
