Few fans who seldom venture outside of stock car circles know who Ave (pronounced AH-vey) is, but he has one of the most extensive resumes of any driver in the garage. A native of Wisconsin who now specializes in sports cars, Ave has raced everything from sprint cars to midgets to open wheelers. He has even raced snowmobiles. Though Watkins Glen marked his NASCAR racing debut, Ave has been a test driver for Nextel Cup and Craftsman Truck teams. He also has prior stock car experience in the ARCA/RE-MAX series, scoring two Top Five finishes in three career starts.
Ave, who has a Bachelor's Degree in business administration from the University of Wisconsin, was the Pro Sprint World Snowmobile champion in 1993. For the next few years Ave was all over the map, racing in Trans-Am, Formula Atlantic, the North American Pro Series, and the Oldsmobile Pro Series. In 1996, he made his debut in the Toyota Atlantic Series and won the first event he competed in.
Ave's career almost ended in 1997 after he suffered severe leg injuries in a crash at the Road America course in Wisconsin.
Tony's comeback trail has been paved with success. In 1998, he finished second in the Pan-American GT Championship, and followed that up with third place in the Trans-Am Championship in 2000. In the meantime, he also managed two third-place finishes in USAC Midget cars. Ave ran the full 2001 season in the Toyota Atlantic Series, driving for the P-1 team co-owned by baseball great Robin Yount, winning at Nazareth and finishing sixth in the points. He returned to sports cars in 2002, finishing second to Scott Pruett in the Trans-Am event at Lime Rock.
