As we now go into the off season, only to wait till February for the Daytona 500, let's look back at what worked and what didn't for all three series.

Sprint Cup:

What Worked:

Surprisingly, the "Boys, Have At It" Mantra seem to have worked out very well. It provided some close action racing where drivers traded paint, but the drivers didn't abuse the Hel out of it. I hope they'll keep this going into the 2011 season.

The Green-White-Checker rule also worked, no longer are races finished under yellow, but under green. It has provided some of the most awesomeness finishes that I haven't seen in a long time.

What Didn't Work

I'm sorry, but the COT still needs to go. I'm glad that the COT will be given a more distinctive body in 2011, it's a step in the right direction, however I still say alot can be done.

If I had it my way, NASCAR would cancel the 2011 Sprint Cup Season. I would take Brian France, and the entire boardroom on a nationwide tour of short tracks during the Spring and Summer. There, they will see what Stock Car Racing is supposed to be like.

Get rid of the stupid spec racing and have Ford, Chevy, and Toyota set up special shops where they take the chassis and body of the cars, and turn them into race cars to be used by the racing team. Keep all the safety feature of the COT, without the cookie cutter bodies.

That way, a Toyota will look like a frickin' Toyota, a Ford will look like a frickin' Ford, and a Chevy will look like a frickin' Chevy!

Basically, have the automakers make the body, chassis and engine block. Everything else is fair game. Also, this would be a GREAT opportunity for the automakers to innovate some new body design as well as marketing. "Come buy the car that won the Daytona 500!"

I'll be honest, I wasn't happy that when The Chase bagan, that the points standing was all mixed up based on how many races a driver has won. Don't do that again!

Finally, the points leader of the regular season really does need a reward, or a trophy, something to recognize his points standing in the regular season.

Comments, thoughts?

The Chase is still awful and it still needs to go. Just start awarding more points for wins. Make it 100 points more for wins, idc. Almost anything would be better then the current chase setup.

The Chase isn't going to go anywhere, but it can be modified.

  • Give race winners more than 10 points for each win when resetting the standings leading into the Chase.

  • Stop giving 5 bonus points for leading under caution.

  • It's time to start using fuel-injected engines.

Agreed that NASCAR is basically spec cars anymore.

Pretty good list, but one thing I would add that did work: double file restarts.

Agreed, I'll also add in the Lucky Dog Rule also worked. It prevented alot of accidents due to drivers racing to the start/finish line.

I'd also like to add that the NASCAR officials in the boardroom need to stop this whole idea of appealing to the masses. Stock Car racing started because of Southerners who were moonshine runners. The Southeast is where the vast majority of your fans are. I know that in the 90s and early 00s, NASCAR did see a rise in popularity, but that's because NASCAR was the "in" thing. Now NASCAR isn't. Maybe it's time for NASCAR to revisit it's root?

What worked:

Boys have at it!
Racebuddy (when it was available)

What didn't work

1) The Lucky Dog and The Waive around.
Both of these make the sport look less credible. NASCAR really needs credibility to bring back the fans.

2) ESPN - They just don't know how to cover Auto racing.

3) Boggity Boggity Boggity. DW has to go. He's an embarrassment to Fox, NASCAR, and himself. How are fans supposed to convince their friends (and this is critical) to check out a race or two with this guy doing his redneck nonsense?

4) NASCAR's online strategy. They don't have one.
