GM, Ford and Chrysler all dropped support for NASCAR? Toyota would be the only auto maker to lend support to their teams, and it seems that whether it's Toyota or NASCAR, they can't be giving any more support to new teams. Would we see more merges where it could become nothing but four teams. GM under one garage, Ford under another, same with Chrysler and Toyota. NASCAR could in affect, be in control of the teams, setting up all the testing sites and equipment so that all the teams could be equal. The only real difference would be the decals and the power train, sort of like it is now. But NASCAR would supply everything except the power train and of course, the setup. I guess this would be a semi-crate operation. I think the car owners should look towards NASCAR like many companies now are looking at the federal government for free handout.

I read some years ago that NASCAR has gotten big enough that they could actually sponsor their own races and still come out way ahead. They have been pushing for their own cable channel and I believe they have their own brand in several different things. If the American automakers drop their support, then we might as well have NASCAR-ROC and forget about a different make. Design a car and allow the teams to put what motor they want and the rest of the power train. No changes in the body allowed so the emphasis would be put on the setup and of course who could build the best engine. But wait, if they have just one body, let's just have one crate engine and then the emphasis would be put on the setup alone. No wait, before each race, drivers will draw for what car they get and will have four hours to practice, test and put the decals on the car for the race. Gotta have that number you know so the score keepers can keep track.

I'd write more, but my ambien is kicking in and I'm finding it harder to see the monitor to see if I make any mistakes, which is rare! :)

Jimme johnson would be like frnank kimmel and be 10 time champion, if we did that.

You forgot splitting the races into sections and inverting the race order, randomly of course, to create excitement. :D

In the 70's, the Big 3 pulled factory support from NASCAR for a number of years. Most of the teams ran Chevys since those engine parts and components were easier and cheaper to find. You still had a few Ford teams and a few Dodge teams, but most were Chevys during that time. If that happened now with Toyota offering the only support, you'd see mostly Toyotas or NASCAR would have to step in and limit their support. But that would also open the door for Honda or another manufacturer.
