What would help NASCAR more? Danica Patrick win a NNS race or Jimmie Johnson NOT win the championship this year?

Both would help SHORT term but it would go back to the same old stuff 2 weeks after.

Danica winning in IndyCar didn't help it too much. Just sayin'.

Of course, nobody could see Danica's win because it was on ESPN Classic in the middle of the night.

I would lean more towards Jimmie since the cup race is the premire series. I think what has hurt it is the chase system, yes it was fun the first couple years thinking oh man their is about 8 serious contenders to win. Now the past 4 years when the chase starts its like you already know who is going to win. What would help the chase is to switch some of the races up year to year so its not just the same 10 races. I know it would be difficult schuedualing and weather and all but whats happening now isnt working.

Wouldnt it be nice to see tracks like Watkins Glen, or Bristol get rhown in their? That would make for unpredictability which right now the series needs.

and with the play by play announcers in long beach IIRC....

Everyone is on Danica for her performances and we all have our opinions. She only made the circuit because of two things...she is a female and she made a splash in the IRL. Look at the standings in the Nationwide series and see who is behind her. I'm sure all of those guys have many more miles in a stocker than she has, but yet she gets the better equipment. Why? If you own a stocker, who are you going to give the ride to for a couple of races when you are guarenteed a gazillion dollars and more than anyone else TV time? I don't care if it's Elmer Fudd, you're going to make that choice, and remember, you have plenty of other drivers lining up afterwards to take over. It's not Danica's fault that all of this attention is on her. She just produced it all. NASCAR has been looking for a female driver for years and with Shawna Robinson failing to make the headlines, Danica is just the next in line for them.

What would help NASCAR get better has nothing to do with JJ or Danica. Shorter races, less left turn tracks, more road courses, and run some superspeedway races right instead of left, not have 43 cars in very race, and most of all get one station to broadcast all the races. That's what I think needs to happen to NASCASR. But also going back to driving cars that are based on cars you see driving on the streets we all drive on, like what NASCAR was born from. If NASCAR has an engine the makes 800hp there should be a stock car that gives everyday drivers 800hp.

I flat out don't have the enthusiasm I had before. When cable came in the
80's you could count me out on Sunday afternoons, I was parked in front of the tv come he77 or high water. We had men racing back then, intense rivalries. Petty against everyone, Sr v Jaws, Awesum Bill, Alan Kulwicki, Davey Allison, Ernie Irvin, even Kyle was somewhat competitive.
Davey finishing second to his dad!!!
Then came Gordon, remember that mustache he tried to grow?

NA$CAR went Park Avenue, no more fights in the pits or behind the hauler. We now have the Gillette "Young Guns", half of which don't appear to shave.

They say the Music died when the plane crashed with the Big Bopper etc.
I think racing died, at least it's spirit, in turn 4 of the 500 in 2001.

A little correction here. :)
The music died when the plane crashed with Buddy Holly. Yeah, I know, the Bopper was also on it.

Uh, there was one other on that plane besides the pilot. You gonna dis him too? Remember Richie Valens too. :D

But I will agree with SST about the 80's. And I agree that the sport changed when a young Jeff Gordon came onto the scene. It wasn't so much when Jeffy came to the Busch series because he seemed to be coming up and paying his dues as everyone else had before him. I was when Rick Hendrick flashed those millions in front of him that changed the sport forever. I could go on and on about how Jeffy screwed Bill Davis, but that's water under the bridge now. Today NASCAR is a completely different sport than it was in the 80's. It's not how you can drive that gets you a seat in a car, it's what you can bring to the sport ALA Danica. Maybe, and a big maybe, the driver that most resembles those oldies is Tony, and I'm not all that sure he would survive those days. But Tony is a real racer and is more like Kenny Schrader who was one of those oldies. But it isn't just the drivers who have changed. It's the cars and I've said it before, I blame it all on Roger Penske but it would happen even without Roger. The almighty dollar has driven this sport and it isn't just at the top either.

The almighty dollar (read cost of sponsorship) is driving this sport.Sponsorship in the tens of millions is going to a Casey Kane or a Jimmy or Jeff and not to a Buddy Baker or J D MacDuffie type. Write to the sponsors. They want a spokesperson for their money.Hopefully they get a good driver too.

:growl:

SST55, you could not be more right. I have always felt with #3 was killed, so was Cup series. Ironically, that was Fox's first broadcast. Getting rid of Fox would help NASCAR a little :growl:
