Red Sox owner interested in Roush Racing
Lee Spencer Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service

Despite denials from Fenway Sports Group president John Henry that no deal was in the works between the Boston Red Sox owner and Jack Roush on Sunday at New Hampshire International Speedway, Roush Racing president Geoff Smith released a statement Tuesday confirming ongoing negotiations.

"(Roush) has entered into discussions to sell an interest in Roush Racing to Fenway Sports Group, Boston," Smith said. "Should these discussions ultimately materialize into a definitive agreement, Roush Racing will provide further information on the topic."

Henry, a longtime race fan and current investor in iRacing.com - a cutting-edge simulation racing league - has expressed interest over the past two years of possibly joining forces with either Roush Racing or Germain Racing. Fenway Sports Group brought the Lumber Liquidators deal to Germain Racing for driver Todd Bodine and the No. 30 Toyota Tundra in the Craftsman Truck Series this season.

Henry's involvement with Roush Racing would give Roush the opportunity to consolidate to four teams as per NASCAR's mandate that goes into effect when current contractual agreements run their course. Roush's Nextel Cup operations consist of the Nos. 6, 16, 17, 26 and 99. Roush also has an alliance with the No. 60 car. An arrangement with Fenway would allow Roush to pare down to four teams with one or more teams going to Fenway.

Roush had earlier looked at Mark Martin, driver of the No. 6, taking on an ownership situation at Robert Yates Racing in order to meet NASCAR's mandate. Martin, however, said earlier this month that his current interests were not in an ownership realm.

Interesting stuff. I have known for quite awhile that Henry was interested in Nascar but thought it was all just that......interested .......the same as you and I.

I believe the 4 car mandate is going to result in some strange and different arrangements.

I'm all for this...although im not if it results in more cars for Roush.

i personally believe that Roush has really hurt this sport.

What makes him that much different from Hendrick???

nothing...im not a fan of what either of them have done to the sport...those are the 2 teams that have really started pushing the 4 and 5 car teams.

Personally I think both of them have advanced NASCAR, and in Jack's case MANY different auto racing series, as well as greatly increased the safty in all.

Roush Racing Confirms Discussions To Sell An Interest In Roush Racing To Fenway Sports Group: “Roush Racing confirms,” said Geoff Smith president of Roush Racing, “It has entered into discussions to sell an interest in Roush Racing to Fenway Sports Group, Boston. Should these discussions ultimately materialize into a definitive agreement Roush Racing will provide further information on the topic.”Roush Racing is a subsidiary of Livonia, Mich., based Roush Enterprises that operates 14 motorsports teams; five in NASCAR NEXTEL Cup with drivers Mark Martin, Matt Kenseth, Jamie McMurray, Greg Biffle and Carl Edwards, six in the Busch Series with Martin, Kenseth, Biffle, Edwards, Todd Kluever and Danny O'Quinn, Jr., and three in the Craftsman Truck Series with Martin, David Ragan, Erik Darnell and Michel Jourdain, Jr. - Roush Racing, Press Release

These racing teams have helped make racing far safer and more exciting than it would have been without them. Look at all the drivers, crews, and families that have benefited. It's all about $$$$$ folks, and I am all for putting people to work that want and need it. This is an exciting field, and I don't care how many cars an owner has. If NASCAR deems it necessary to limit the number of teams an owner may have under his umbrella(name), them so be it.
The times are changing, as are the rules, safety, tracks, and whatever to make the sport more competitive even for the small owners of one or two teams. Just equalize the dollars to help the small owner.

The only thing Roush has hurt is the feelings of the Chevy boys.

If only Hendrick and DEI could spread some of their gear around Nascar we could call it fair.
